House clears illegal aliens for college aid

"We have urged them to dream! We have urged them to dream!"

    --

The Arkansas House of Representatives voted 63-31 to pass a bill that would allow illegal aliens who graduate from Arkansas high schools to qualify for in-state tuition rates and taxpayer-funded state scholarships at state universities. "We have allowed these kids to dream," said Rep. Joyce Elliott, D-Little Rock, in support of her House Bill 1525. "We have put them in our schools, we have urged them to dream, and then we cut them off the moment they get out of high school."

While seven lawmakers spoke in support of the bill during debate on the House floor, the measure drew silence from opponents. None of the 31 lawmakers who voted against the bill chose to speak against it. "I think most minds were made up," said Rep. Mike Kenney, R-Siloam Springs, who voted against it. "Speaking for myself, I didn’t see any point in belaboring the issue. It wasn’t going to change any minds."

The governor and legislature are debating whether to provide in-state tuition rates and state-sponsored scholarships to illegal immigrants. Rep. Joyce Elliott (who is black) compared current bans on illegal aliens receiving in-state tuition and state-funded scholarships to segregation and discrimination against blacks. That's like comparing a preacher to a prisoner. They are both God's children and they might both be crooks, but they haven't earned the same rights.

The real question should be, how can we give preferred treatment to any illegal before we have given a scholarship to every legal citizen resident in our state? If Ms. Elliott and the governor prefer the Hispanics to their own Arkansas citizens they should go to the appropriate country and represent them where those they prefer are legal. All you citizens who are paying to send your kids to college should be mad.

We usually think of the problem of illegal immigrants being Hispanics from Mexico. Mexico is only one of many countries with corrupt governments whose citizens are trying to leave. China has a couple billion, India has a couple billion, and I can name dozens of others countries that have millions of people who want to come to the United States.

I strongly believe in life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, but all the world's people cannot pursue it in the U.S. We need immigration, legal immigration, perhaps a million a year in the whole country but the illegal invasion must stop. The legislature's efforts should directed toward locating the illegals, punishing the people who employ them, establishing procedures so they can't vote and helping them return to where they came from, not rewarding them. Does it sound like the governor would like to use this issue for a Hispanic vote in his next campaign?

    Scary

This is scary stuff because the Latino lobby is about to make the same pay here in NC. Right now, illegal aliens are admitted to k-12 with no questions asked. They are prevented from going to college. Under the new "Dream Act" legislation they would be allowed in 4 year public colleges at "in-state" tuitition rates.

The results? 1. Thousands of legal America students will be deprived of secondary education since college enrollement is zero sum. 2. In NC the taxpayers subsidize each 4 year institution in-state student to the tune of 8k per year...community college 3,500 per year.

We have experienced 1 billion dollar budget holes the last 4 years in a row, can you imagine what this legislation would do? Our lawmakers are oblivious enough to follow CA right over the edge into financial oblivion. As CA goes, so goes the nation in this respect.
