Immigrants disappointed but not deterred by judge's ruling

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Immigrants expressed disappointment Tuesday after a federal judge put a hold on President Barack Obama's plan to protect more than 4 million people living illegally in the U.S. from deportation. But many said they haven't lost hope.

A look at immigrant views of Obama's programs:

Growing up in Guatemala, Keyla Betancurth used to watch her single mother cry at night because she could not afford to buy food for her children. Betancourt left school at 12 to work at a bakery to help. Then, at 17, she took a bigger step, paying a smuggler to get her to the U.S.

"I wanted a better future for myself and for my mom," said the 28-year-old, who wants to apply for Obama's program for the parents of Americans. "Now, I'm a mother, and I want the best for my kids. I don't want my kids to suffer like I did."

Betancurth, who has three young children, has been a farmworker in California and Iowa and, since moving to Denver three years ago, a maid. Her husband, who is from Honduras, paints houses.

For both, steady, well-paid work is difficult to find because they lack Social Security numbers. She wants to return to school to study hairdressing and, one day, open her own salon.

"My big dream is to study," she said.

    ___

Claudia Ramon, 46, said she and her daughters did not give each other presents this past Christmas because they were saving their money to pay the application fees for Obama's immigration program.

With the delay, the family now plans on exchanging small gifts on Wednesday.

"We feel powerless but not defeated, sure that it will all work out," said Ramon, who cleans homes for a living in Houston but was a psychologist in her native Colombia.

She said she lives in fear, afraid a simple traffic ticket will take her away from her family.

She recalled an accident five years ago when a police officer asked her for her driver's license. She told the officer that she didn't have it and that she had been on her way to take her daughter Isabella, who has Down syndrome, to physical therapy. The officer let her go with a warning.

"I know there are good people. I know there are people who understand the human reasons why we are here," she said.

    ___

Ericka Alvarez, 35, was planning on applying this week for Obama's program for those brought to the country illegally as children.

She and her husband want to buy a mobile home in Santa Clarita, California, where they can live with their two children. They have saved the $10,000 deposit and qualify for a loan, but the park owner won't let them in because they don't have Social Security numbers, she said.

Alvarez also worries about boarding a plane to a training session for her job as a nutritional-supplement saleswoman, because she carries only her Mexican passport. She had hoped Obama's program would change that before her next trip.

"I'm thinking about whether I should go or not," she said.

    ___

Jessica Nuñez, 40, and her husband have been in the United States for 18 years and have three U.S.-born children.

Originally from Santana, in the Mexican state of Sonora, Nuñez lives in Tucson, Arizona, and has been gathering the paperwork to apply to the new program this year.

Nuñez said life without legal status has been tough, especially when family emergencies arise in Mexico and she can't go back.

"It's like they have our hands tied," she said.

    ___

Sabine Durden, 57, welcomed the judge's ruling putting a halt to Obama's immigration programs.

Durden came to the United States from Germany more than two decades ago legally as the wife of an American citizen. For many years, the Moreno Valley, California resident questioned the U.S. government's policies on immigration, but after her 30-year-old son was struck and killed by a driver who was in the country illegally and who had a prior criminal record, she became an activist.

"It didn't have to happen," she said.

While she voted for Obama, Durden said she was disappointed by his recent programs on immigration.

"I am happy that finally somebody put a foot down and said we can't just do whatever we want, not even the president," she said.

The employers of all the illegal aliens in this article need to be arrested and the illegal aliens deported including all members of the family who are illegal aliens or minor children so they accompany their parents. They are without question stealing jobs from Americans, and this can not be tolerated. Not one more minute of one more day. We have our own people to think about and they need these jobs.

I am quite sure they all expected this. Our representatives of both parties are just putting on a show and should all get awards. They have no intention of deporting these people they are votes and that is what it all about. Votes and cheap labor. The citizens of this country could matter less. It is our representatives who should be deported and the people should wake up to this.

Yep, that's why my signature line says "Save America, Deport Congress". But I will give credit where and when credit is due, and this time we must give credit to the Republicans who are delaying Obama amnesty. This is good, and a turn in the right direction. The more time we have, the more chance we have to defeat this monster which is politely called illegal immigration.

And deportation is the only answer. It's not who they are, where they are or where they're from. It's all of them, who are taking money, jobs, seats, opportunities and futures away from American citizens. This is why we have immigration laws to begin with. These are not laws that can be ignored, bypassed, usurped, prioritized or breached by any official or group of employees in our government, because of the dire consequences of overpopulation, increased unemployment and poverty, not to mention the decline in education and the adverse impact on our culture and political system. It can not be tolerated, not one more minute of one more day. It ends now.

Honestly, I don't think we have to deport 20 million illegal aliens. I think Romney had an excellent point when he said something about enforcing our laws and many will deport on their own. If we make it almost impossible to live here illegally, they'll have no choice but to leave. The first thing we need is a mandatory national E-verify program. After that we need to secure the border so tight a fat gnat's butt couldn't squeeze through. Once we have the E-verify program in place and the border secured the U.S. Congress can start passing individual federal laws that remove any doubt as to what each state, city, and community can do where illegals are concerned. We must stop invidual communities and states from supporting and aiding illegals. Yep, no more driver's licenses, permits, identification cards, sanctuary laws, in-state tution, etc., etc. How many times have we heard all matters concerning immigration are the responsibility of the federal government? States, counties, and cities should not be able to do their own thing where immigration and immigrants are concerned.

Okay, I realize all of this isn't going to force the criminally minded to deport on their own. Those are the guys that we'll have no choice but to actively purse and deport. IMO, those guys should be easier to find in a couple years because if we do all of the things I identified earlier, they'll probably be the only ones left. Everyone else will probably leave within a year or two if the support faucet is turned off because they have families to support and mouths to feed! It'll be easier for them to survive in their home country on less than here on nothing. This problem was created overnight and it's not going to be solved overnight.

Oh, and one last thing. We must turn up the burners on employers that knowingly hire illegals. I'm talking about mandatory jail time and the loss of business licenses, not just fines.

I know I haven't covered everything here, but I think I've said enough to make my point. Yep, I guess you can call me a "dreamer." Thanks for listening to my rant.

Absolutely! When we start enforcing US immigration law, most of these illegal aliens will pack up and go home, especially the criminals to evade long prison terms or even worse, depending on their crimes here. But I did some research awhile back on our state and local law enforcement officers, and we have over 1.1 million in state and local police personnel, with 800,000 of those sworn, trained and equipped police officers. If we have 12 million illegal aliens, then that's about 15 per officer. According to FBI arrest of persons report, our state and local law enforcement officers arrest about that many in a year, just about 1 a month. So tell me, does a police officer who only arrests between 1 to 2 people per month have time to arrest 1-2 illegal aliens per month? I say, well, crap, of course they do. They could arrest house fulls of them every other day. And what a wonderful sense of accomplishment for the police officers, to finally be able to arrest all the drug dealers, gang-bangers, frauds, thieves, illegal workers, welfare suckers, DUI drivers and so forth in our country illegally on a simple immigration violation and with 1 arrest get a drug-deal, gang-banging, illegal working, welfare sucking, drunk driver out of the country. That's a bunch of birds with 1 little stone. They'd all be gone in less than 6 months, and what a debt and tribute we would owe to our state and local law enforcement, because they would not only be solving the illegal immigration problem for us, they would be removing the ravages caused by it from the United States.

And with the arrests, they would be photographed and fingerprinted, entered into the system, with all their other data, and with this type of file on them, it would be very difficult for someone to come back without being snapped up immediately. And once they're all out, then this stops the anchor baby ruse and significantly reduces the chain migration that NumbersUSA has been working so hard on all these years.

There is no fix to the problem without enforcing the law and deporting illegal aliens in accordance with the law. It's no different than what police officers do every day all across America, when they arrest someone for trespassing. And if the feds refuse to remove them, then that's fine, state and local police are perfectly capable of handling the removal as well. After all, the immigration courts are in their states and their towns, same as other courts. Nothing could be simpler than a deportation hearing, no documents, no stay, order to deport, no different than a pink slip Americans get at work, police and sheriffs haul them away, and that's the end of it.

And any politician who wants to whine about it, is a politician on the take with the cartels behind this travesty. Because we know the politicians, we know they've never once told a sob story about an American citizen whose life was turned upside down and inside out with a job loss because they were replaced by an illegal alien. They lost their homes, their savings, some lost their families over the money issues, some met with very dire circumstances and enormous suffering and loss. Some have even lost their lives. And where was the compassion from these politicians? Nowhere. It never even occurred to them to comment on it. Too busy reading their scripts written by National Council of La Raza and the drug cartels behind it.

So worry not at whit about the effects of deportation on illegal aliens. This is not our concern. They created their own mess by coming here, lived off our citizen's jobs for a good spell, sucked down a bunch of tax credits and welfare off our country's treasury and debt capability, sent a ton of money back to their home countries that depleted our money supply, and lived well by breaking the law, like any criminal.

Now grow some spines and authorize the states to get them out of here.
