QUESTION: How was the number 12 million arrived at for the total of illegal immigrants in this country? If they snuck in, who counted them?

ANSWER: The number comes from the Pew Hispanic Center, a nonpartisan research organization supported by the Pew Charitable Trusts, which used U.S. Census Bureau data.

The center first estimated a total of 11.1 million illegal immigrants in the country in March 2005.

A simplified version of the calculations is that researchers at the center came up with that total by subtracting the number of legal immigrants from the census total of foreign-born population.

Since then, the center has used monthly population estimates to keep the illegal immigrant total up to date -- now about 12 million.

The center's numbers are widely used by news agencies, lawmakers and educators.

The center figures that Michigan has between 100,000 and 150,000 illegal immigrants.

It estimates that 850,000 illegal immigrants have arrived in the United States each year since 2000.

I have been wondering how the number was gotten,imo it (the Pew site) is conservative in its guesstimations.

What I find interesting is they were using this same number during last year's debate of S. 2611, and if they claim that 1 million illegals are sneaking in each year, they should at least tally this number up to at least 13 million; even though we all know there's at least 20 million or more.

They pull it out of somewhere.

The last time they pulled one out of somewhere, that I remember, was the 1986 Amnesty Bill. They said one million then. The one million turned into about three and a half million after it passed and they started cutting in line for amnesty.

The twelve million now will turn into something else too.

I figure a conservative estimate would be twenty seven million...

South American Media claims 30 million! I read that in a paper my son brought back from Costa Rica last year! So like you said who knows!

They figured it would be enough to convince the bleeding hearts its just too many to deport. But not too many to convice regular Americans we are facing a human tidal wave thats changing the Nations future. Thank goodness, they were off in their calculation to fool America!

YOU CAN AVOID PARTICIPATION IN THE CENSUS ALTOGETHER BY NOT ANSWERING THE PHONE OR THE DOOR.

I don't know how many illegals are here, but I know it is a heck of a lot more than any 12 million. I'll bet California alone has 12 million. They're everywhere you look out here.....thick as fleas on a dog.
