.
A man who police said may have been involved in drug trafficking was shot multiple times and killed while sitting in his car in the middle of a street in Casa Grande Monday, authorities said.
A 911 call was made to report a shooting at 11:30 p.m., the Pinal County Sheriff's Office said.
When officers arrived they found the victim, Roberto Raya-Ortiz, 31, dead in a Dodge Stratus parked in the middle of the roadway.
Witnesses said they observed an early 2000s model Chevrolet Impala pull up next to the vehicle Raya-Ortiz was driving and fired several shots, deputies said. The suspected vehicle sped away westbound. Officers have not located a vehicle matching the description.
Deputies said Raya-Ortiz was involved with drug trafficking from Mexico. Officers said that, according to relatives, Raya-Ortiz was responsible for transporting "scouts" to various locations in Pinal County. Raya-Ortiz had told relatives he was fearful for his safety because cartels felt he was "a snitch," deputies said.
Officers said Raya-Ortiz was Mexican citizen in United States illegally and was awaiting a deportation hearing.

And they say the border is secure. This is a cartel killing right here in the US. This is about 30 miles from where I live. Casa Grande is a big cartel operating area where the Deputy was shot earlier this earier this year and one of the main trafficking routes through the desert. Three different stories out today all related to illegals and drugs and all within the Casa Grande area. Sheriff Babeu wasn't joking when he stated his county is under attack from the cartels. BTW...the feds just recently removed the warning signs from the desert and replaced them with signs stating heavy law enforcement monitoring area or something to that effect. Apparently these smugglers don't read or aren't worried about that.
