NEAR ABRAM — A U.S. Border Patrol agent says an alleged human smuggler ran his vehicle off the road during a pursuit Saturday afternoon.

Border Patrol agents on ATVs spotted immigrants boarding a white Chevrolet Blazer about 5 p.m. Saturday in the La Paloma Wildlife Management Area near Peñitas, according to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court.

Agents spotted the Blazer less than a mile west of Abram along Military Highway.

The Blazer's driver, Juan Najera Bautista, allegedly swerved into oncoming traffic and forced a Border Patrol agent to to swerve off the road, the complaint states.

Other agents continued to chase Najera, a 31-year-old Mexican national, and caught up with him after the Blazer collided with a fence near a church along the highway.

Agents managed to arrest Najera after a struggle along with seven other Mexican and Honduran nationals.

The immigrants told agents they feared for their life and asked Najera to stop, but he refused.

Najera made an initial appearance on human smuggling charges Monday in U.S. District Court in McAllen. He remains in federal custody.

Thats what you get for entering illegally with a smuggler. They do not care about their cargo, only the money they are making.
