MEXICO CITY (AP) — Hundreds of migrants have been stuck for three days along railway tracks in southern Mexico because the freight train they usually ride toward the U.S. border caught fire.
Migrant shelter worker Saul Salazar says about 2,500 Central American migrants have been sleeping outside and waiting by the tracks for repair crews to remove an engine that caught fire earlier this week.
Salazar said Friday that only about 100 migrants fit inside his Home of Mercy shelter in the town of Arriaga, in southern Chiapas state. He says the shelter has been giving rice, beans and chicken to the rest.
Migrants cross the Mexican border and hop atop the train to move them closer to the United States.
