Hundreds of people gathered in San Francisco Saturday for a celebratory anti-racism protest after a far-right group canceled its own event in the city.
Protestors took to the streets near the city’s Alamo Square after a far-right, pro-Trump group, Patriot Prayer, canceled their own rally in the city. Organizers had planned on holding a press conference instead but that too was canceled when the city blocked access to the park, the LA Times reported.
Members of groups like the Democratic Socialists of America and other protestors marched with rainbow flags signs that had messages like “stop pretending your racism is patriotism” and “white supremacy is terrorism.”
Marchers chanted “our streets” and briefly faced off with police at barricades near the park, which the city had blocked off, yelling “let us through.”San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee (D) had condemned the rally as contradicting the city’s values of “love and compassion.”
“You all know that some people are coming in tomorrow to our city. You know as well as I do that they have a message that we don’t believe in, a message of hate,” Lee said. “But San Francisco is a city of love and compassion, and we will always lead with love and compassion.”
