Hundreds of workers told plant to close in Buncombe CAFTA

We in NC can thank people like Flip Flopin Robin Hayes and Sellout Sue Myrick for this. More to come.

Hundreds of workers told plant to close in Buncombe County
    Associated Press

SWANNANOA, N.C. - A textile plant in Buncombe County that employees 350-400 workers will close next year and move to Honduras, employees learned Wednesday.

Anvil Knitwear Inc., which produces fabric for T-shirts and other clothing that is shipped to Central America for cutting and sewing, cited "competitive pressures" as the reason for the move. The company said it would start reducing operations at the Swannanoa plant later this year.

"I think it's an American business trade, like they told us," said Theresa Cairaway, known as "Big Mama" at Anvil, where she's worked for 16 years.

Cairaway didn't blame the company, which she said helped her raise two children.

"And I think if you have faith and you believe, there's always sunshine after the rain," she said.

Such moves out of the U.S. are made more attractive by passage last year of the Central American Free Trade Agreement, which eliminates or lowers U.S. tariffs on fabric made there, said Helmut Hergeth, who teaches textile management at North Carolina State University.

Buncombe County had 1,516 textile and apparel workers in the second quarter of 2005, which was less than half of the 3,847 it claimed a decade earlier.

"We have delayed the transfer for as long as practicable," Anvil said in a news release. "In fact, all of our major competitors have already made the transition."

NC has been hit so hard due to this CRAP,our jobs sent to other countries, so why do we have one the fastest growing illegal immigrant populations in the nation? Why are so many coming here? I guess to take the few remaining jobs that are left . NC is doomed.

had_enuf, here is the link to N&O Forum in Raleigh. To get there from Google, you go to www.newsobserver.com, then look for "triangle.com" on the far right about half way down, click, then when triangle.com shows up on the screen, scroll all the way down to forums and then click on "current event", then scroll down until you find the "free forum" and then look for the topic. You will have to register at some point to post. But I think if you just click on the link below, it should take you right in to the thread where I posted this article in post 80.

I posted it in the "Consumer Debt Up Consumer Savings Down" Thread.

Beware, there are BushCultists/Globalists that chase me on this Forum constantly. They are DOH, Strutter, SimonSays, AngryAlbum, HockeyPlayerX and Dustin Frank. They are so bad that if they showed up for a back yard BBQ, I'd call the PO-lice and have them removed. These are the people that have gotten us into this mess and who preventing solutions. They are total "ilk".

    In otherwords, it's brutal.

So, please chime in whenever you like.

I live in Buncombe County, and this plant closing is just another in a long stream of plant closings in this area. The textile plants have been hit hard, but all manufacturing plants in general are suffering here. Our U.S. Representative for this District is Charles Taylor (R). He promised to vote against CAFTA, but when the vote came up, his vote was recorded as a non-vote. He swore up and down that he voted NO, but that a glitch in the system, caused his vote not to be recorded. There was a lot of arm twisting going on by the Bush administration, with a lot of backroom deals, right before the vote. Taylor usually wins re-election easily, but the CAFTA fiasco may have cost him the next election. A lot of conservatives are very upset with him. Another NC Representative, Robyn Hayes said he would vote against CAFTA, but caved in to the pressure and actually changed his vote from a NO to a YES. CAFTA passed by two votes, a tie vote would have defeated CAFTA. We were betrayed by our Representatives.

"But CAFTA will create more jobs than it destroys!"

How can this be? Rep. Lamar Smith stated, in writing, that CAFTA will create many more jobs? Anybody got any Florida land deals for the Honorable Lamar Smith?

Some questions arise. It was posted on this, or another website, that Costa Rica did not "ratify" CAFTA due to an election or whatever it was. So, is CAFTA still enforceable upon the remaining countries that did "sign," the treaty or law or whatever the hell it is?

    OR

Are employers given carte blanche to go ahead and fire their workforces, and "obey CAFTA" ahead of it's full implementation (or whatever)?

So, US companies "obey CAFTA" and the gaining countries are under no obligation to reciprocate (whatever the hell that was going to be)? Is that the way it works? Well, I guess CAFTA is an incentive for employers to fire their employees sooner. So, if Central American countries are supposed to start buying what we manufacture....

    (1) What are they gonna use for money to buy thing with?
    (2) What the hell do we manufacturer anyway (besides power plants and airplanes) since most of our stuff comes from COMMUNIST RED CHINA!

Ahem. for the record, The Honorable Lamar Smith didn't cite what country those new jobs would be created in.

What part of "We don't owe our jobs to India" are you unable to understand, Senator?

CAFTA is a con game. It will cost the USA jobs, millions of them just like NAFTA. It will cost the USA trade deficits, billions of dollars of it just like NAFTA. It will flood the USA with poor immigrants looking for jobs with the only jobs to find being yours. The cost of items will not decrease.

CAFTA was a Screw Job. A Total Lie. A Con Game. A BushWhack.

There is absolutely no benefit of any kind to the American People from CAFTA.

There is however a huge cost to the American People in factory closings, lost jobs, lost operating budgets, lost tax base, lost production, lost GDP.

It is a loser all the way around and was known to be. Any CongressKritter who said otherwise was either grotesquely misled or didn't have enough information to speak an opinion and should have kept his or her mouth shut and voted NO.

It is a Treason Treaty and sadly won't even help the other nations that much either as the wages the companies that move there will pay are squalor wages. Other business interests are the utilities intending to monopolize the market and the food industry intending to shut down all the local farmers and implement GMO, Genetically Modified Organism Farming, and the pharmaceutical industry that wants to start over on his patent rights and prevent generic manufacturing of medicines.

It's evil. There is just no other word for it. All the farmers shut out will go to the cities, such as they are looking for work and there won't be any. Now they are disenfranchised without land, without a home, without a livelihood, and can't even grow their own food to eat to stay alive, and alas...they'll be handed the "Map to America"...just like they did with the 800,000 Mexican Farmers disenfranchised by NAFTA.

    It's gut-wrenching horror.

Anyone who can still possibly think George W Bush is a good person would have to be as insane as he is. NAFTA was his father's invention, but actually signed into law by Clinton because Clinton won the election when George One ran for re-election. As we can see there is no difference between a Bush and a Clinton. They are all Globalists plotting the end of the United States through Free Trade Agreements and unfettered immigration into the United States to bring us down to third world economic status at which point being American will mean the same as being Indi, Paki, Afghi, Mexi, Hondi, Irani, Iraqi, Israeli, Ruski, Kori, Chini, Afri, or whatever else they plan to call us besides "Member, Global Civil Society".
