    I.C.E. removed 343,020 people from Oct. 1, 2012, to Sept. 7, 2013

Deportations Set to Drop by 10 Percent in 2013

    BY TED HESSON - 12/17/2013, 11:28AM / Updated 12/17/2013, 11:31AM

Deportations likely tapered off in the past year, according to new data obtained by Bloomberg Businessweek.

U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE) removed 343,020 people from Oct. 1, 2012, to Sept. 7, 2013, the outlet reported.

If deportations continued at that rate through the rest of the fiscal year — Sept. 30 — then removals would have reached a low not seen since 2008.

That would be a 10 percent drop from 2012.

Even with the projected decline, the deportation numbers under the Obama administration far exceed those under his predecessor, George W. Bush.

An immigration reform effort in Congress fizzled out in 2013, with a large-scale bill blocked by the Republican-controlled House of Representatives. The bill, which passed the Senate, would have provided a pathway to citizenship for millions of immigrants living in the U.S. without papers.

Increasingly, immigrant rights activists are calling on President Obama to halt deportations, or issue some form of deportations relief for the country’s estimated 11.7 undocumented immigrants.
