    Reported by Ana Anguiano

BROWNSVILLE – The inmate escapee accused of fatally shooting a man and leading police on a high-speed chase in Brownsville had been on deportation orders before.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS learned U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement ordered Michael Diaz Garcia’s deportation years ago.

The suspect led multiple law enforcement agencies on a 21-mile chase across Cameron County last Thursday.

The Cameron County Sheriff’s Office said Garcia was being taken to a dentist’s office in Brownsville. While he was being transported, he managed to get out of his handcuffs.

Not only did Garcia manage to unlock his restraints, but he was able to leave the Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center armed with a shank.

He used it to stab the transporting officers and steal his gun.

Garcia then made his way into a nearby home where he shot and killed a man before stealing a car. That’s when he led authorities on a chase that ended with a police-involved shootout in San Benito.

    Garcia died in the shootout.

In a statement the following day, local authorities said he had an immigration detainer placed on him.

ICE told CHANNEL 5 NEWS Garcia was from Cuba and had been in the U.S. for six years already.

The agency said Garcia racked up numerous felony convictions, including drug possession, intent to distribute and conspiracy to make or possess explosive devices.

ICE said Garcia had already violated orders of supervision to report to the agency when he was arrested again in February 2016.

Horrible. I feel so sorry for the victims of someone who shouldn't have even been in our country to begin with.

GET THEM OUT. GET THEM ALL OUT.
