Jersey City police raid uncovers Chinese immigrants, illegal rooming house, authorities say

The Jersey Journal was on the scene this morning as a Jersey City police raid revealed a suspected illegal rooming house -- the second police raid in two days.

Police found 15 Chinese men living in the two-family house on 354 Wayne St. in an illegal apartment at the rear of the house's garage, and a registered second floor apartment that once had 19 beds.

At today's scene, the bunk beds that were once squeezed into the living room of the apartment were gone - replaced by rows of luggage. The doors to the other rooms in the apartment were padlocked shut.

After questioning from police, the 15 Chinese men were shuffled into a gray, Ford E-350 van and were told by authorities to leave the premises. The men said they were off to the Chinese Consulate of New York.

Police became suspicious after receiving complaints about numerous people coming in and out of a one-family house at 210 Pavonia Ave., where there was also large amounts of trash thrown out, said Mark Redfield, the Assistant Director of the Division of Housing Code Enforcement.

Police found additional information after questioning 15 Chinese men and their driver that led them to the other residence on Wayne Street.

Yesterday, authorities issued multiple summonses at the house for what appeared to be another illegal boarding house. At the one-family house authorities found 15 Chinese men who authorities believe work for the China Rilin Construction Corp., said a source familiar with the investigation who didn't want to be named because he is not authorized to speak about it.

There were also 28 beds and the doors were padlocked, the source said, adding that one of the men said they all had valid passports, but the passports were being withheld from the men.

Due to the poor living conditions in the home, police allowed only seven of the men to go back into the residence, while the remaining eight were taken in by the Chinese Consulate of New York, Redfield said.

Officials said the landlord of 210 Pavonia Ave. was contacted yesterday and police are attempting to reach the owners of the building, identified by officials as Lawrence and Maria Cyran of Millburn.

"This is one of the biggest task force finds in years," said Redfield.
