Four killed, 21 injured in smuggling rollover
HEIDI ROWLEY
Four people were killed and 21 injured in what officials are calling Santa Cruz County's "most serious" human smuggling accident ever.
Sheriff Antonio Estrada said Border Patrol requested several medical units at 11:45 last night on Upper Elgin Road, which is two miles from the border, east of Nogales. Estrada said he doesn't know if a pursuit preceded the accident, or if Border Patrol agents came upon the accident.
He said the 25 people who were killed or injured were in a Ford 250 crew cab pickup or in the truck bed. The bed did not have a camper or shell on it and all those in the back were ejected. The truck had been reported stolen out of Phoenix, Estrada said.
Seven people were taken by helicopter to University Medical Center, one person by helicopter to Tucson Medical Center, and 13 people by ambulance to hospitals in Benson and Sierra Vista.
Estrada said investigators believe all 25 involved were Mexican nationals.
He said they have detained one person for questioning who was in a separate vehicle, who may know something about the accident. Estrada said they are also sorting out who the driver or smugglers are to "to hold them accountable."
Estrada said of the 25 people injured or killed, one was a woman, and several were teenagers. There were no children in the truck.
Estrada said the road where it happened is paved, but is narrow and curvy. Estrada speculated that the driver could have been unfamiliar with the area, or became "spooked when he saw Border Patrol."
