OTAY MESA — Border Patrol agents requested the help of a San Diego bomb squad to investigate a suspicious device in an Otay Mesa tow yard Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

Few details of the incident were immediately available, but San Diego police and fire officials said the Border Patrol sought their help around 3 p.m. at a yard off Airway Road on the far east side of Otay Mesa, south of state Route 905 and west of state Route 125.

A San Diego police sergeant confirmed the call centered around a suspicious device found at a tow yard used by Border Patrol agents. The sergeant said San Diego officers were in the area providing support, including traffic control on surrounding roads.

The site is off Airway Road between Piper Ranch Road and Avenida De La Fuenta North, according to an online incident log from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, which showed that five bomb squad vehicles remained at the scene as of 6 p.m.

A Fire-Rescue Department spokeswoman confirmed that Border Patrol agents requested the bomb squad.

10News reported the suspicious device was inside a vehicle that was seized during a drug-smuggling investigation.
