Number of illegal migrants in U.S. unchanged at 10.8 million

Number of illegal migrants in U.S. unchanged at 10.8 million

Washington – The population of illegal immigrants in the United States as of January 2010 remained at the same level as the previous year, with a total of 10.8 million, with Mexicans continuing to make up 62 percent of them, according to an official report.

The document released Thursday by the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Immigration Statistics, says, however, that the number of unauthorized immigrants has dropped by 1 million from the record 11.8 million in the country in January 2007.

Between 2000-2010, the number of those living in the United States illegally grew by 27 percent.

Of all the undocumented immigrants in this country, 39 percent entered the United States in the year 2000 or later, and 62 percent were from Mexico.

Most unauthorized immigrants "either entered the United States without inspection or were admitted temporarily and stayed past the date they were required to leave," according to the DHS report.

Between 2000-2007, the unauthorized immigrant population had grown by 3.3 million, from 8.5 million to 11.8 million, signifying an average annual increase of 500,000 people in the U.S. illegally.

The number of unauthorized immigrants dropped to 11.6 million in 2008, and to 10.8 million in 2009 during the economic crisis in this country.

Lacking exact figures, the consensus among academic leaders and activists of the immigrant community is that in the United States there are between 11 and 12 million illegal aliens.

The most recent estimates of the Pew Hispanic Center, for example, put the number of unautorized immigrants in the United States at 11.2 million in March 2010 and at 11.1 million in March 2009, numbers "consistent" with "trends reported by the DHS," the document says.

By regions, the report says that some 8.6 million unauthorized immigrants - 80 percent - come from North America, which for the DHS includes Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America.

In second place comes Asia with 1 million, followed by South America with 800,000.

Between 2000-2010, the biggest increase took place among natives of North America (2.5 million) and the greatest decline was among natives of Asian countries (200,000).

Mexico continued to be the chief "source country" of unauthorized immigrants. There are 6.6 million unauthorized immigrants from Mexico in the United States, which represents 62 percent of the total.

Last year the leading source countries of unauthorized immigrants in the United States were El Salvador (620,000), Guatemala (520,000), Honduras (330,000), and the Philippines (280,000).

India, Ecuador, Brazil, South Korea and China, in that order, complete the list of the 10 countries that together make up 86 percent of the undocumented population.

Between 2000-2007, the population of unauthorized Mexican immigrants rose by 2.3 million, and by 340,000 between 2007-2010.

The numerical changes in the other unauthorized immigrant populations were far less notable in both of those two periods.

"California remained the leading state of residence of the unauthorized immigrant population in 2010, with 2.6 million," followed by Texas with 1.8 million and Florida with 760,000, the DHS report says.

Twenty-four percent of the unauthorized immigrant population is now settled in California, compared with 30 percent in 2000.

Between 2000-2007, the number of illegal aliens increased by 620,000 in Texas, 320,000 in California and 270,000 in Georgia. Meanwhile, between 2007-2010, the unauthorized community in California dropped by 260,000 people.

Some 63 percent of undocumented aliens in 2010 were made up of foreigners between 25 and 44 years old, with 57 percent of them being men.

Males also made up 62 percent of undocumented young people between 18 and 34 years of age, though 53 percent of those over 45 were women.

I'd like to see the formula they use for such guesswork. Seems fairly common sense to me that with one being in the country illegally they are hiding from the US and local governments. That in itself makes them impossible to track unless the DHS is admitting they know today where every single illegal is in the US.

Maybe show us numbers of how many false US Citizens have no parents who are US Citizens or legal residents.

    10.8 million undocumented aliens.

I do not care to take topic post into a dispute, so I will simply express...no one truly knows the exact amount of illegal aliens residing and hiding in shadows nationwide in this Country, although we can guess eternity about the subject, we will not know the truth.

Undocumented immigrants sneaks into the U.S. daily and nigtly every week, so how can anyone keep up with the numbers of unlawful persons entering or residing in this Country?

When Cenues workers arrives to residents most likely they never receives a full account of undocumented aliens because most hide from Cenues workers, because they do not want to be deported.

Hmm...Wasn't the "estimate" of 86 found to be a bit off? Didn't it turn out that 2 and a half times that estimate got the "one time only Amnesty?"

Yeah, I may be old but I'm not effing senile yet!

How can the number of illegal invaders in this country not change if ICE is deporting illegal invaders as they proclaim to be? Shouldn't the number be going down, especially if the border were secured as napalitano claims and ICE were actually deporting illegals?

    I'm confused!

Don't let ANYONE from the latin american countries come in under ANY circumstances for at least another 50 years! All they ever do is try to con the system by coming in illegally to begin with or over staying their visa. If you give them an inch, they take a million miles!
