    Bust yields 7,500 bullets in truck heading to Mexico

    U.S. border inspectors looking for a special breed of smuggler — one that sneaks things into Mexico from the United States — found 7,500 rounds of ammunition stashed in a pick-up truck.

    The bust, which went down quietly Saturday in the Rio Grande Valley, was announced for the first time this afternoon.

    CBP Officers at the Anzalduas/Reynosa International Bridge Seize 7,500 Rounds of Live Ammunition during an Outbound Enforcement Operation

    (Monday, April 12, 2010)

    Mission, Texas – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers and U.S. Border Patrol agents working outbound enforcement operations at the Anzalduas/Reynosa International Bridge seized 7,500 rounds of live ammunition early Saturday morning.

    CBP officers and Border Patrol agents working the southbound lanes at the Anzalduas International Bridge came in contact with a southbound 2003 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck that was headed into Mexico. The driver was identified as a 36-year-old Mexican citizen from Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico. After a brief interview, the driver and vehicle were referred to secondary for further inspection. In secondary, officers found 7,500 rounds of live ammunition hidden within the pickup truck. CBP officers seized the ammunition and the vehicle.

    U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
