ICE Deportations Fell to Lowest Monthly Level While Border Crossings Remain at 20-Year High

The Washington Post is reporting that US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deported fewer illegal aliens in the month of April than in any other month on record.
According to preliminary data obtained by the Post, ICE deported only 2,962 illegal aliens in April—the first time the monthly figure has fallen below 3,000.
“This administration has de-emphasized the likelihood that people would get arrested if they aren’t a threat to public safety or recently crossed the border, so they are not going to have strong removal numbers,” said Ronald Vitiello, former acting director of ICE. “That’s part of a signal being sent—that immigration enforcement isn’t a priority for this team. The odds of being arrested just for being in the country illegally were always extremely low, and now they’ve basically ruled it out by policy.”
Although President Joe Biden has refused to say that he will abolish ICE, the Department of Homeland Security has abolished much of ICE’s work by greatly restricting their ability to make arrests and deportations. Back in February Big League Politics noted that “under DHS guidelines implemented [by] Biden, [ICE] has been instructed to exclusively arrest the most hardened violent felons and thugs, with arrests of most convicted criminals done away with.”
As for the US-Mexico border, the situation still remains a crisis. The Post adds that the new monthly low in ICE deportations comes as illegal border crossings remain at a 20-year high. Big League Politics reported in March that the Biden administration has instructed Border Patrol agents to adopt a catch-and-release policy:
An exclusive report claims that the Biden administration is releasing illegal aliens into the country without setting dates to appear in immigration court, according to a high-ranking Border Patrol official.
Breitbart published the report Sunday, and the official spoke to them anonymously because he is not authorized to speak about such matters publicly.
“This is insane, it is another pull factor that will overwhelm us,” he said. “We are creating another entirely different class of aliens we will have to deal with years from now.
We will never find most of these aliens once they are released.”
