Geraldo Rivera calls for end to raids

    Michael Paulsen / Chronicle

FOX News host Geraldo Rivera caused a stir at the downtown Hyatt today, where he was a speaker and panelist on immigration issues for a Greater Houston Partnership luncheon.

A vocal, pro-immigrant advocate and frequent foil to conservative commentator Bill O'Reilly, Rivera was greeted by about 15 protesters outside the Hyatt Regency Houston, where he spoke.

Rivera called for President Barack Obama to end worksite enforcement raids. He also said the Obama Administration should better define guidelines for the federal government's 287g program, which deputizes local law enforcement to act as immigration agents.

The federal government's main focus, Rivera said, should be on targeting international street gangs and Mexican drug cartels.

"Go after the bad guys," Rivera said. "Don't go after the people who are just like your grandparents, and your great-grandparents and your great-great-grandparents."

Protestors from local anti-illegal immigration organizations carried signs opposing illegal immigration and called Rivera a "traitor."

"He is so pro-illegal (immigrant)," said JoAnn McCracken, a 70-year-old member of the organization Texans for Immigraton Reform, which advocates for stricter immigration controls. McCracken said she was primarily concerned that illegal immigration causes a burden for taxpayers. "The costs are so high," she said.

Rivera, however, said the tone of the immigration debate has had serious consequences for Hispanics in the U.S.

"We have created a slanderous condition and environment in our country, where the 46 million of us who have Latino roots now feel beleaguered, now feel besieged, now feel as if we are 'the other,'" he said.

I see that Geraldo read his Little Golden Book of Big Words before he wrote his speech.

Geraldo may be a lawyer and a US citizen, but he is not necessarily an American patriot. I cannot mention where I would love to see him stuffed.

He is also a traitor. Remember his war coverage in 2003 where Rivera disclose an upcoming operation Iraq, even going so far as to draw a map in the sand for his audience. GREAT JOB TRAITOR.

Not only is Geraldo a traitor he is also a COWARD. An NRA magazine article pointed out, "Rivera, who has made plenty of noise in the past by promoting various anti-gun proposals, revealed recently that while covering the war in Afghanistan, where he doesn't feel quite so safe, he's conveniently jumped to the other side of the fence."

Which is even more of a reason that hispanic's in this country should be against the illegal immigrants that have put them in this position instead of supporting them.
Immigration reform should reflect a commitment to enforcement, not reward those who blatantly break the rules. - Rep Dan Boren D-Ok
