ICE to remove woman who attempted suicide
ICE to remove woman who attempted suicide

A young Honduran woman who tried to commit suicide last week in a South Texas detention center for immigrant families will be deported, according to a nonprofit legal group representing her in court.
Lilian Yamileth Olivia-Bardales, 19, was taken out of the detention center in Karnes County on Monday, and her lawyer was told by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that she’ll be deported, said Mohammad Abdollahi, an organizer with Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services in San Antonio.
Olivia and her 4-year-old son have been detained since October.
A judge ordered Olivia, who had been removed from the U.S. once before, deported in February, and her appeal was denied in mid-May.
Abdollahi said RAICES will ask the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals to reverse her removal order.
Olivia tried to commit suicide on Thursday in a bathroom at the detention center, Abdollahi said.
At the time, ICE said Olivia had non-life-threatening injuries. She had “a surface-level abrasion to one wrist,” according to a statement from the agency, and was treated at the facility.
For now, ICE said Olivia-Bardales remains in custody. “ICE does not confirm dates or times of removals for operational security reasons,” the agency said in a statement.
In a suicide note RAICES provided to the media, Olivia said she fled Honduras after her brother was killed and her son was abused.
“I do this because I would rather be dead than seeing my son fail along with me,” she wrote.
Abdollahi said that, as an asylum seeker, Olivia should have been released while her immigration case proceeded.
“ICE should grant Lilian parole, because she fled severe violence, she’s a refugee, and she should be able to process her case from the safety of a place where she can work through her trauma,” he said.
“There’s no right way to detain families.”
