More than 280 undocumented immigrants arrested in Bexar County in 2017

More than 280 undocumented immigrants arrested in Bexar County

    by News 4 San Antonio

    ICE Arrests

SAN ANTONIO — A shocking number of undocumented immigrants have been arrested in Bexar County this year already.

Since January the jail has processed a total of 282 people in the U.S. illegally. Immigration and Customs Enforcement or "ICE" took all but 39 of those into custody.

Sheriff Javier Salazar tells us that the 39 were charged with less serious crimes.

“ICE issues the detainer, and we honor those detainers,” Sheriff Salazar explained. “It's not for us to question why ICE is choosing to detain those that they detain. We corporate with them, and then we continue doing our job as we are able to."

So what does that mean for the 243 others? Those are the ones, we're told, that ICE has "probable cause" to believe are removable from the United States because the crimes would rise to the felony level.

    Who’s to blame?

Who's to blame? It's a question many family members of victims have asked in the past when it comes to illegal immigrants with records committing more crimes on U.S. soil.

Should there be new laws or do current ones just need to be better enforced?
A day in court date for Juan Miguel-Juan, which Freda Stewart says comes far too late.

"I don't want someone else to get a phone and arrive at an accident scene like I did where you can't even recognize your child for all the blood," said Stewart.

Her son Triston Smith was 12 in 2015 when he was the victim of a hit and run. Police say Miguel-Juan was the drunk driver behind the wheel, who fled the scene and the state after paying a $2500 bond.

"The drunk driver in Illinois who ran off after being given this laughable bail is the kind of thing that's happening all over the country," explained.

Mark Krikorian, Executive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies.
Krikorian says there are countless examples.

“Everything. She meant everything,” said Kim Owens.

In Maryland, Kim and Sherman Owens daughter Jasmine was killed by an illegal immigrant drunk driver in 2011. Jose Salmoran had 23 prior traffic and misdemeanor convictions.

If he had been arrested and deported at the time we wouldn't be sitting here,” Kim told us.

“I feel let down by the system,” added Sherman.

That system, says Krickorian, is one that should be changed.
“What's most outrageous is when is illegal immigrant is in the custody of the government is let go,” said Krickorian.

Opponents say the federal government crackdown has gone too far with reports of tens of thousands of new arrests of undocumented immigrants under the Trump administration. In Washington, there’s a renewed call by many for immigration reform.

Despite his tough talk on the campaign trail, even top Trump officials are now admitting they can't go it alone.

“We have to figure it out, and I blame that squarely on the United States Congress,” said Secretary John Kelly on Meet the Press.

It’s a move that’s proven difficult in the past but one that may become a priority in the months ahead.

What is "shocking" is that the number is not 2,800,000, instead of just 280 of them arrested and deported yet.

Load up the Stadium...get the buses lined up, filled up, and headed to the border!

This is all great to hear, but this is a numbers deal and these numbers are way too small. We've got to ramp this up many times over and if we need the 82nd Airborne to assist in this effort, a team that evacuatd overe 45,000 people out of flood waters in New Orleans in 24 hours, then that's the type of team we need to see engaged here because those are the types of numbers we need to see. And we need to see it .... fast.

That said, if state and local law enforcement agencies engage, then you can see the 1 or 2 arrested at a time business, because there will be 800,000 of them going on at a time across the country. But for federal forces to be arresting these onesies and twosies and taking 5 agents or more to do it, well ... that just is not going to work.

So ICE needs to operate with Management by Objectives, by the numbers, to get this problem solved with 5,000 ICE agents, the number we have now, which means they need to arrest 7 illegal aliens per day per agent to remove 15 million illegal aliens in 2 years. To move 30 million they'll need to arrest twice that many per day or increase the number of agents to 10,000. So they need to target big groups in high-density areas to move this to a prompt resolution.

I'm sure they're working on this, but they really need to speed it up. Time is of the essence.

That's why you've got to ramp it up. Get the numbers up. Target large groups in high-density areas. Have judges on-hand to process them quickly with 2 simple questions.

    1. are you a citizen? yes or no
    2. do you have legal unexpired documents to be here? yes or no
    3. if no and no, out you go.

    Simple as pie. Easy Peasy.

    Get it done.
