DES MOINES, Iowa —The Department of Homeland Security announced Tuesday that 25 arrests were made in Iowa by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials last week.
DHS officials confirmed to KCCI that the 25 arrests were not connected to a May 9 ICE raid in Mt. Pleasant.
Officials could not say where the arrest were made, but confirmed that criminal immigrants and immigration violators were taken into custody across the state.
The arrests were part of a six-day enforcement action across five states, including Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.
ICE officials said a total of 78 men and women were arrested by deportation officers during the operation.
Sixty-two of the people arrested had prior criminal convictions; 31 had illegally re-entered the United States after having been previously deported.
Most of the people arrested are from Mexico. The arrests also included people from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Kenya, the Ivory Coast and Sudan.
They will remain in ICE custody pending additional proceedings
