Sept. 10, 2014 – Large-scale law enforcement effort targets downtown Los Angeles businesses linked to money laundering for drug cartels
Approximately 1,000 law enforcement officials fanned out across the Fashion District in downtown Los Angeles Sept. 10 to execute dozens of search and arrest warrants linked to businesses suspected of using "Black Market Peso Exchange" (BMPE) schemes to launder narcotics proceeds for international drug cartels. Special agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) posted seizure notices Sept. 12 on three Los Angeles-area homes, including a mansion valued at approximately $8 million, in the latest developments stemming from Operation Fashion Police, an HSI-led probe targeting alleged large-scale money laundering by businesses in the Los Angeles garment district.
