CORPUS CHRISTI — Four of the 16 people taken late Friday to McAllen area hospitals following a rollover accident have been released into the custody of immigration authorities and have been confirmed as undocumented immigrants, U.S. Border Patrol officials said.

A white 1990s Chevy extended cab pickup fleeing from border patrol agents rolled at about 9:15 p.m. because of a tire problem, said border patrol spokesman Joe Treviño. The wreck was a quarter mile north of Farm-to-Market Road 755 on U.S. Highway 281, south of Encino.

The other 12, including the driver, remained in hospitals Saturday. One woman was transferred to a San Antonio hospital, Treviño said.

The truck’s occupants are all accounted for, he said. No children were among the group.

The pickup was registered in Texas, Treviño said.

Countries of origin, ages, the number of men and women and their conditions were not available Saturday, Treviño said. All will be released to immigration officials as their conditions improve.

Department of Public Safety is investigating the incident.

And again the American taxpayers get stuck with their medical bills, incarceration and deportation. Wouldn't it be cheaper to close the borders?
