Elgin city council candidates discuss immigration at forum

Illegal immigration took center stage at an Elgin City Council candidate forum Monday night, but like the last Association for Legal Americans debate, discussion remained civil.

Ten people are running for three, 4-year city council terms this spring.

Incumbents Robert Gilliam, Juan Figueroa and John Walters hope to win re-election; challengers Richard Dunne, Brenda Harris Khan, Shane Nowak, John Prigge, Linda Quezada, Lenora Scruggs and Bruce Trego hope to unseat them.

Trego was the only candidate who answered a flat out "no" to a question asking whether candidates would support a measure requiring all companies that have contracts with the city to allow the city staff to do a monthly audits to see if their workers have been OK'd as legal citizens through the E-verify program.

"This isn't Germany 1939 - it's America 2009. It's extremely divisive for our community," he said.

Walters questioned who on the city staff would do this job. Other candidates seemed to support it, but with differing degrees of gusto.

"It's proactive. It's an indication to everyone that Elgin is serious," said Prigge, who has been endorsed by AFLA.

Gilliam did not attend the forum because he was ill.

Monday's questions, many of them yes or now, were more pointed than a forum held last month.

One question posed was: "When a council member is sworn into office, he takes an oath to uphold the laws. Illegals are breaking the law by being here. Do you believe that anyone who supports or defends illegal immigration should sit on the city council?"

Incumbents Figueroa and Walters said yes, along with challenger Trego.

    Everyone else said no.

Figueroa was the only candidate who responded yes to the question of whether he or she has accepted campaign contributions from unions that represent city workers.

Also on April 7, voters will decide who will fill the remaining two-years on a council seat vacated when Mike Powers resigned last year. The candidates are: Emi Morales, Mike Robins, Brenda Rodgers and Mike Warren.

Germany in 1939 is totally irrelevant. This is nothing more than multiculturalism propaganda. The subject is about whether to continue to aid and abett ILLEGAL ALIENS. This jerk has succeeded in muding the waters.

Thank you to all who attended the forum last night. We had a good crowd of approximately 150 people. I'd like to believe that the candidates were able to speak their minds about the issues.

There were other questions about immigration enforcement, overcrowding, parking, and the image of Elgin.

We invite everyone to get to know the candidates before April 7th.

One way is to check out our "Candidate Central" where we've posted the answers to our questionnaire along with links to the candidates' websites.

I attended last night's forum. Richard Dunne and John Prigge were the stars of the forum. Their answers were informative and fresh. Elgin needs a change; we need new council members that will not be part of the Schock fraternity. Elgin has to address overcrowded neighborhoods which so greatly affects our way life and our home values. Much of this problem can be traced back to the thousands of low income uneducated illegal aliens that have been welcomed for years by Schock and his council buddies.

Dunne and Prigge offered a fresh and constructive views that will address these problems. They'll give you and I a chance to finally see that Elgin gets the change in leadership it so badly needs. We must vote for Richard Dunne and John Prigge We must NOT vote for Juan Figueroa, John Walters who are the council members who are major players in the Mayor Schock fraternity. Please get out and vote on April 7. If we don't vote for change we are domed to the same old way.

Prigge and Dunne were remarkably informative, interesting and, at times, inspiring. Change can happen in Elgin. These are grassroots candidates entering the political process for the first time.

Both men seemed strong on illegal immigration enforcement, which must become the blueprint for our immediate future.

Any member of the council who will not stand up againist illegals in Elgin, will most

certainly not get my vote. This present council has kept their heads in the sand far

    too long.

Elgin council hopefuls want federal immigration assistance
by Harry Hitzeman | Daily Herald Staff
    Published: 3/4/2009 12:07 AM

A year ago, Elgin city leaders requested greater access to programs and initiatives offered by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE.

Today, city leaders are still waiting for a response.

Some of the 10 candidates running for three Elgin City Council seats April 7 believe the city should work with other communities to demand answers and take action that will give local law enforcement more authority to identify illegal immigrant criminals eligible for deportation.

"I would definitely be in favor with enlisting help, getting a uniform type of coalition to go to ICE and say 'Look, this isn't a city of 100,000 asking, it's a coalition of 3.2 million,'" said John Prigge, one of seven challengers hoping to unseat incumbents Juan Figueroa, Robert Gilliam and John Walters in next month's election.

Other challengers are Richard Dunne, Brenda Harris Khan, Shane Nowak, Linda Quezada, Lenora Scruggs and Bruce Trego.

Walters said applying for ICE access has been one of the most frustrating tasks during his 22 years on the council. ICE officials keep making up excuses, he said, delaying action and not returning calls.

Figueroa said other cities are waiting too.

"We're at the mercy of the Congress of the United States of America," he said. "They're the ones who need to fix the illegal immigration issue in this country."

Illness kept Gilliam away from a recent candidate forum on immigration issues and he could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Other challengers offer different takes on the issue.

Dunne said the city has not sent ICE a letter demanding action and is calling for a face-to-face meeting between city leaders and the federal agency. Scruggs said people need to write their Congressional leaders to spur action and

Nowak sides with Prigge on what he called an important issue.

Quezada, however, said illegal immigration is a national issue.

"I understand that we've waited some time," he said."However, I don't believe we're being ignored."

Khan said ICE is overwhelmed and the government should set up another agency specifically to help cities.

Trego said there's more important issues facing the city.

"War on drugs, war on terrorism and now we're going to have a war on illegal aliens," he said. "We wonder why our taxes are so high. It's because we're out there fighting everything and we're expecting all sorts of services."

ICE spokeswoman Gail Montenegro wrote via e-mail Tuesday that the city has submitted a written request for assistance, and the agency is complying in several areas.

"ICE will continue to cooperate with Elgin on public safety initiatives that fall under ICE ACCESS, such as Operation Community Shield to target illegal immigrant gang members and Operation Predator that targets sex predators, among others," she wrote.
