Illegal immigrant sentenced for perjury in fatal wreck

An illegal immigrant who drove the wrong way on U.S. 31, hitting and killing another driver, was sentenced this morning to a year of probation.

Maria E. Garcia, 30, of Columbus, testified she was pregnant at the time of the wreck in September and accidently turned south in the northbound lanes of U.S. 31 near Lowell Road when she began experiencing contractions.

Garcia's vehicle hit a northbound vehicle driven by Russell Kelsay, 61, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Garcia was taken to the hospital, where she gave birth.

She was charged with perjury, a Class D felony, because she used a fake Social Security number to obtain a driver's license.

Bartholomew Circuit Court Judge Stephen Heimann said he does not connect the tragic accident with the perjury.

"She could have just as well been in this accident without ever obtaining the license," he said.

The judge said he will notify immigration authorities so that they can begin deportation proceedings if they so choose.

I have to tell you. I started saving this articles to my word processing software just a few weeks ago on a daily basis. I'm going to have to get flash drives just for each month the way this is going. We are seeing more and more articles and we all know this is just the tip of the iceberg. I'm going to have to divide them into months or types of crimes or both. Yipes! Just think if every crime was written about and we had them.

One year probation for killing someone in an accident???????
Did she have auto insurance to pay the final expenses for the victim's family? Did taxpayer's pick up the tab for her newborn?

This is crazy. She and her anchor should be sent home before she gets a new fake ID and disappears "into the shadows"

One year probation..if she is not going to jail (which is an outrage) why is she not being deported...

I will bet she does not speak english and could not read the sign Just a guess!

Yeah , i found the 1 year probation to be a double standard also . Unreal the pain these Illegals cause

It's if they choose part that bothers me. However, we are seeing ICE being far more aggressive in deportations lately.

ROFLMBO either that or just too much time on my hands. NO I want to document as much as possible to try and be as articulate as possible when approaching city leaders. We are slowing building our group and one baby step at a time to get things going here. IF not, they will be on notice that we are watching them and we will do what we can as citizens to work with ICE to get things changed here. CAP is already in play with the Sheriffs jail. So that is a big plus. Now we have to get our locals to question those they stop.
