S.A. man accused of getting guns for Zetas

A Mexican national arrested this month on a state charge of possessing heroin found at his South Side home now has been charged in federal court over 19 assault rifles and thousands of rounds of ammunition authorities say were destined for the Zetas cartel.

Julio Cesar Campos, 36, made his first federal court appearance Wednesday on a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was detained pending a bail hearing Oct. 30.

A tip from a confidential informant led San Antonio police to his home in the 300 block of Stonewall Street in search of firearms.

Police recovered 19 assault rifles and 8,000 rounds of ammunition, plus heroin, drug ledgers and packaging supplies.

Campos told police that others would drop assault rifles at his home, where they would obliterate the numbers.

Campos previously was deported and served 18 months for returning to the U.S. without permission.
