Final undocumented group to cross Sunday from Mexico

Oregon immigrants, allies at California border: Final undocumented group to cross Sunday from Mexico

This week, a group of allies from Oregon is helping about 150 undocumented immigrants attempting to cross into the United States from Mexico.

Bring Them Home, a project led by the National Immigrant Youth Alliance, hopes to reunite those immigrants with their families in the U.S. Eight Oregonians convened Monday with hundreds of other supporters at the Otay Mesa border entry point in California to rally and provide support.

About 80 people are now in immigration detention centers after presenting themselves to immigration authorities. One man has been deported so far, organizers said.

This isn't the first effort of its kind, though it is the first time Oregonians have been directly involved, including the support group and one undocumented woman who will attempt to cross the border Sunday. The youth alliance is known for its controversial political demonstrations against U.S. immigration policies.

Brent Renison, chair of the American Immigration Lawyers Association's Oregon chapter, said the effort is risky because there is no guarantee the detained immigrants will be granted asylum or humanitarian parole. He advised one undocumented client against participating.

"The problem is that you have to be extremely careful with what you do," he said. "Crossing the border is the difference between, you know, life and death."

On Thursday, President Barack Obama called for a review of deportation practices, seeking a more humanitarian approach to immigration law enforcement.

Bring Them Home was initiated in July 2013 when the Dream 9, a group of young immigrant rights activists, crossed the Arizona border and turned themselves in to Border Patrol. Immigration officials ultimately released all nine on parole and allowed them to move forward in their bids for asylum, a process that will likely take years.

In September, another 30 young immigrants attempted a border crossing. Most have been allowed to remain in the U.S. either on discretionary parole or to pursue asylum, though some were deported.

The effort this week is the its third and largest so far, expanded to include anyone willing to try and cross the border. The first two groups of immigrants crossed Monday and Thursday, said Liliana Luna, one of the organizers from Hillsboro. The third and final group is expected to cross Sunday, she said.

Made up of about 60 mothers and children, this group also poses the biggest risk.

Luna said the man sent back to Mexico Tuesday agreed to a voluntary deportation when pressured by immigration officials. His 11-year-old U.S. citizen daughter was taken into Child Protective Services custody before being released to her mother, Luna said.

"A lot of kids with moms will cross Sunday," she said. "We’re really thinking about the consequences with that. We have to be strategic so they don’t get separated."

    U.S. Customs and Border Protection
, the agency processing entering immigrants, did not respond to a request for comment.

Another group of 60 Mexican migrants detained trying to enter US at San Diego in protest

    THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
    March 16, 2014 - 8:07 pm EDT

TIJUANA, Mexico — Sixty Mexican migrants have been detained by U.S. authorities for crossing into the United States from the border city of Tijuana as part of a protest against U.S. immigration policies.

It was the third such group to try to enter the U.S. at the Otay Mesa border crossing in San Diego in the last week.

Mothers holding their children's hands, young students and others gathered Sunday at the border and before crossing said they are protesting a growing number of deportations during President Barack Obama's administration. They are also demanding an overhaul of U.S. immigration laws.

The group was led by two sisters, ages 11 and 12, whose parents live in North Carolina. The girls haven't seen their parents in 10 years.
