Border Patrol in Maine Make Arrest During Transportation Hub Check

    Release Date: January 30, 2020

Border Patrol Agents conducting transportation hub check operations in Maine in January 2020

PORTLAND, Maine – On Sunday, January 27, U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Portland area to conduct transportation check operations encountered
a Jamaican National who was later found to be illegally present in the United States.

Agents encountered an adult male from Jamaica. During questioning, he provided a Jamaican driver’s license, but stated he had left his passport in New York.

Record checks later indicated that he entered the United States legally in April of 2019 with a H2B non-immigration work visa.

The visa expired in December 2019
, but he failed to file additional immigration documents, resulting in him
remaining within the United States illegally.

“Transportation checks are just one of the many layers of security the United Sates Border Patrol utilizes to protect our citizens and to deter the exploitation of our public transportation systems by national criminal and drug organizations,” said Robert Leroux, Patrol Agent in Charge of the Border Patrol of Rangeley Station, Maine.

Agents transported the subject to the Rangeley Border Patrol station for processing. During processing, agents located the subject’s passport within his belongings, containing his expired visa.

Agents turned him over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Office of Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO).
