The incidence of a Somali meat packer in Kansas who died from tuberculosis has officials calling for better health screening for the waves of unskilled immigrant workers flooding smaller American communities.

In the wake of the January death at a Tyson Foods plant in Emporia, Kan., public health officials found 160 cases of latent TB among the facility’s 500 Somali workers, according to the Topeka Capital-Journal.

Local officials say the case represents only a small part of the growing problem of foreign-born, unassimilated communities with high rates of communicable diseases such as TB and HIV. Many say they need help from Washington, which has been silent on the issue for too long.

Rep. Charlie Norwood (deceased) of Georgia always mentioned the fact that small towns cannot bear the burden of costs and changes due to the influx of illegal aliens and all of the problems that they present for communities and cities to deal with, including health care and education. With so many people coming to America, whether refugees, illegal aliens, etc., from cultures where individuals may have multiple spouses and many children, how long before we just collapse in certain states and cities from the costs associated with illegal immigration and providing asylum to so very many.

Mandatory health screenings are frequently put off for several months after the immigrants’ arrival. Those who blend into the secretive, tight-knit Somali community often do not resurface to be tested for communicable disease, officials complain.
INSANE! Nobody should enter this nation from a high TB rate area without inspection PRIOR to entry.

Hmmm.......why aren't the "officials" calling for the deportation of the illegal immigrant meat packers? At the very least they should be insisting on employment verification checks.

    Quote from article-
She notes that it is cultural for Somalis to marry up to four wives at one time.

“My concern is multiple children: Is our society prepared to take responsibility for caring for that size of the family? [Sponsors] say it will be a major resettlement [in Emporia]. The community is not ready for this,â€

I agree all immigrants should be met at the point of entry and undergo health exams and testing for TB, hepatitis, HIV, etc. before being settled somewhere in the U.S.

I feel employers owe it to those they hire and fellow employees to provide a health-risk-free enviroment.

Hospitals and medical facilities require all employees have pre-employment and annual exams and testing for the safety of the employee, fellow employees, patients and the general public.

Businesses such as Tyson, participants in our food chain, should be legally required to have pre-employment health exams/testing and annual exams/testing there-after for all employees. Such businesses owe it to us, the consumers. Public health laws should require all businesses employing immigrants to pay for pre-employment and annual health exams/testings, even seasonal workers.
I can already hear the pro-illegal segments and businesses screaming 'discrimination'.....tough. If businesses want to employ immigrants, then they must pay the price of doing so health-wise.

The death of the worker at the local Tyson meatpacking facility was first reported by the Emporia Gazette. A town meeting was held on the issue, which opened many other areas of concerns by residents regarding the foreign workers.
Mast said the TB infections in the Somali community Emporia, a city of 28,000 people, the third highest TB rate in Kansas.
