Illegal alien from Mexico sentenced to prison after returning to U.S. following 2 deportations

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- A Mexican man who has been deported twice was sentenced on September 18 to 21 months in federal prison.
Abundio Garcia-Gonzalez, 48, who had been living in Iowa City but was a citizen of Mexico, was given the prison term after a June 20 guilty plea to one count of illegal reentry of a removed alien after an aggravated felony conviction.
Garcia-Gonzalez admitted he reentered the United States illegally without permission after he was deported in 1997 and 2006 from the United States.
Using various aliases, Garcia-Gonzalez was given voluntary returns to Mexico five times between 1993 and 1998.
In 1991 Garcia-Gonzalez was convicted in California of a felony offense of selling cocaine in 1991 with an alias.
In 1996 he was convicted of the felony offenses of possession of cocaine and escape while felony charges are pending.
He was also convicted in Indiana of aggravated battery in 2002.
Garcia-Gonzalez was sentenced in Cedar Rapids to 21 months’ imprisonment. A special assessment of $100 was imposed. He must also serve a three-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.
