Drug catapult discovered on Mexico border
Night video by National Guard shows smugglers flinging packages into U.S. / Drug smugglers used a catapult to fire contraband over the border between Mexico and Arizona near Naco, authorities said Wednesday.
National Guard troops operating a remote video surveillance system on Friday evening saw several people using the device near a border fence, and Border Patrol agents contacted Mexican authorities, NBC station KVOA reported, citing U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Mexican authorities responded to the scene and disrupted the operation. The alleged smugglers fled the scene in a Humvee and an SUV, leaving the catapult behind — along with 45 pounds of marijuana and an SUV.
Night-vision video taken by the National Guard and supplied by KVOA shows several men preparing the catapult and launching packages before fleeing.
Still images taken at the scene shows soldiers testing the catapult. It's not clear from the video whether they are Mexican or U.S. troops.
U.S. authorities said the dismantling of the operation was an example of cooperation between American and Mexican agencies.
Naco is in Cochise County, about 80 miles southeast of Tucson.

C.B.P. News Release
CBP, National Guard, Mexican Authorities Team to Seize Catapult, Drugs
(Thursday, January 27, 2011)
Tucson, Ariz. – Border Patrol agents and members of the National Guard coordinated with Mexican authorities to prevent a drug smuggling attempt Friday evening near Naco, Ariz. Mexican officials responded and seized approximately 45 pounds of marijuana, a sport utility vehicle, and a catapult capable of launching contraband into the U.S.
As part of the Sept. 8 deployment of 504 National Guard personnel to the Tucson Sector, National Guard troops assigned to operate the remote video surveillance system at the Naco station observed several individuals just south of the international boundary fence preparing a catapult. Border Patrol agents assigned to the International Liaison Unit contacted Mexican authorities who responded to the area and disrupted the catapult operation. Camera operators observed individuals fleeing the area, presumably to avoid apprehension.
“The Border Patrol’s partnerships with Mexican authorities, the National Guard and the public enhance our efforts to address and disrupt the organized drug trafficking threat at the border and serves to degrade the capabilities of transnational criminal organizations. With their continued support and that of the public, we will continue to more effectively address threats before they cross the International Boundary,â€NO AMNESTY
