Pot load captured on truck; felons ID'd
ARIZONA DAILY STAR
Border Patrol agents stopped a man trying to smuggle 875 pounds of marijuana in a pickup and also identified two convicted felons among the illegal entrants they apprehended during the weekend.
The drug seizure occurred at about 7 a.m. Monday southwest of Tucson on Arizona 86, said Richard DeWitt, Border Patrol Tucson Sector spokesman. The incident started when agents in a Customs and Border Protection helicopter spotted an eastbound 1998 Chevy pickup with plywood over the back at milepost 148, a few miles west of Three Points.
Agents on the ground tried to stop the truck, but the vehicle kept heading east toward Tucson, he said. An agent put down spikes that forced the truck to come to a stop at milepost 158. The driver, a 24-year-old U.S. citizen from Tucson, tried to run away but was caught, DeWitt said.
Agents found 874 pounds of marijuana in the truck, worth an estimated $874,000, according to figures from the National Drug Intelligence Center.
The two convicts were discovered during records checks at the Nogales processing center.
A check on Monday at 5 a.m. showed that a 32-year-old man had been convicted of felony assault in California and served four years in prison, DeWitt said.
On Saturday, a similar records check revealed that a 38-year-old man had been convicted of rape in 1994 in Santa Ana, Calif. and served four years in prison, DeWitt said. He also had an outstanding warrant from Sacramento for parole violation, he said.
Both men were scheduled to be processed for re-entry of an aggravated felon.

When is the last time an American citizen was arrested for drug smuggling from wherever? It seems to be all Mexicans now. There's a stat that even Geraldo can't deny!
