A Houston man charged with robbery is accused of using a local radio station to find two victims, who gave their names and phone numbers over the air in an attempt to find work, police said Thursday.

Raul Chavez-Cornejo, also known as J. Ismael Chavez, 40, of the 8800 block of Broadway, is being held without bail in the Harris County Jail. He is charged with two counts of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, but has confessed to as many as six thefts, Houston Police Department robbery investigators said.

The charges against Chavez stem from the robberies of two men who solicited work during a morning radio show on 98.5 FM "La Raza." Police said the victims broadcast their names and phone numbers, and Chavez called them, offering to pay $12 an hour for work.

The two men said they were picked up on separate occasions by a man who took them to a southeast side apartment complex and robbed them at gunpoint or knifepoint, HPD robbery investigator Art Mejia said.

Police said they tracked down Chavez through a cellular phone used to contact the victims. Chavez was arrested Tuesday.

While being questioned, Chavez confessed to both robberies and four other heists, Mejia said.

In some of the cases, police said, victims who thought they were being hired by Chavez paid between $100 and $200 to undergo a physical examination, which they were told was necessary for employment. The victims later realized they had been duped and conned out of their money.

Police said there may be other victims who have not yet come forward because they don't trust the police or fear for their immigration status.
