A 35-year-old illegal immigrant from Mexico is jailed on charges that he groped three women in Ann Arbor over the past week.

The man was charged this morning with three counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct and is expected to be arraigned Saturday, police said.

Ann Arbor Police Detective Bill Stanford said the man was arrested Thursday night and is accused in three incidents – one on June 21 and two on Wednesday.

Ann Arbor police officers had contact with the man on Wednesday, prior to the assaults, involving a disorderly conduct complaint, Stanford said.

The officers then realized the man matched the description of the attacker, Stanford said. The victims in the incidents identified the suspect as the one who groped them, police said.

The first incident occurred June 21 when a jogger on South Main Street was groped by a man as he rode by on a bicycle, Stanford said. Two incidents occurred Wednesday evening — one in the Briarwood Mall area involving a woman who had been shopping and one on South Main Street at 8:20 p.m. In the 8:20 p.m. incident, the woman was jogging when he grabbed her. She elbowed him, and he ran.

Stanford said the suspect is unemployed and in the country illegally. He was recently sleeping in a laundry room in Hidden Valley Club apartments.

The man has an out-of-state criminal history of domestic incidents, police said.

Investigators were securing a translator for Saturday’s arraignment because the man is not fluent in English, police said.
