A man accused of trying to hire someone to murder a police detective is in critical condition at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas after a gunfight with police officers early Thursday in McKinney.
Tactical officers went to a house in the 800 block of Inland Lane with a warrant to arrest Guillermo Urquiza, a 26-year-old illegal immigrant, McKinney police Capt. Randy Roland said.
Gunfire erupted from inside the house as officers neared the front door just after midnight. Inside the home, four officers returned fire, wounding Mr. Urquiza in the stomach and legs, Capt. Roland said.
No officers were injured, and police had not determined how many shots were fired, he said.
McKinney police Detective Marco Robles had recently questioned Mr. Urquiza as part of a criminal investigation, Capt. Roland said. The suspect had been selling guns and other weapons to individuals, one of whom was a police informant, the captain said.
"We were making an undercover buy of weapons, and in that discussion he solicited our confidential informant to murder our detective [Detective Robles]," Capt. Roland said.
No money changed hands, he said, but "there was a discussion about how much it would cost."
Mr. Urquiza's mother, Maria Del Carmen Urquiza, was at the house during the shooting. She was not injured and was taken to the Collin County Jail.
A federal immigration judge has ordered the woman and her son deported to Mexico. But Mr. Urquiza will face nine charges of attempted capital murder, one for each of the officers involved in the shooting, and other charges, Capt. Roland said.
Mr. Urquiza had been booked into the Collin County Jail twice before. He was arrested by McKinney police on an assault complaint in May 2001 and was charged by Allen police with driving while intoxicated in August.
