Illegal immigrants detained in Loudon Co., then released

LOUDON COUNTY (WATE) -- Sixteen illegal immigrants were caught traveling through Loudon County Sunday morning, but a short time later immigration officials let them all go.

Fourteen Brazilians and two Mexicans were found packed into a van. The passengers made it all the way from Texas to Tennessee before being caught.

Tennessee Highway Patrol officers say they got a tip the illegal immigrants would be traveling through Loudon County. When troopers spotted their van, they were pulled over.

But the illegal immigrants weren't in custody for long. A few hours later, officials set them all free.

"The reason why they would let them go is because of budgeting issues," explained a local immigration attorney, Anita Patel.

Patel says this sort of thing happens all the time in the U.S. Immigration officials catch illegal aliens but don't have the budget to hold them in jail unless they're terrorists or aggravated felons.

Many of them are simply given a court date and set free.

"Their court date may not be for another year," Patel said. "And for (officials) to detain them, that would be at the government's expense for the entire year."

But Patel says there's a major problem with letting the illegals go. "It's extremely common that they don't show up for the hearing because they know that if they show up for the hearing that they're going to be deported."

Patel says if they don't show up for court, a warrant is issued for them. Then the next time they are caught, they are immediately detained and deported.

She says illegal aliens are a growing problem in East Tennessee.

Gary Slaybaugh, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent who worked the case Sunday told 6 News his office only has six agents. They simply don't have the manpower to catch all illegal immigrants that come through East Tennessee.

This is insanity! Highway patrol officers (PAID law enforcers) allowing 14 illegal lawbreakers to walk away, scott free? Every Lounden County citizen that has received or paid a traffic citation recently should either refuse to pay or DEMAND a refund! If they had pulled over a van with 14 Americans transporting 50 pounds of pot...the Americans would be lanquishing in jail, guaranteed!

Funny (NOT!) how all those that turn a blind eye to these illegal invaders never have to worry about losing their jobs to one.

"Their court date may not be for another year," Patel said. "And for (officials) to detain them, that would be at the government's expense for the entire year."
Absolute BULLDUDU! They ARE illegal....how are they entitled to a trial?

Simply deport ALL illegals aliens...and make it double-quick!

The hearings ought to be done immediately. We can have Sixx as the Judge. He will take care of business.
