    Illegal Immigrants Work At Gamesa

    POSTED: 6:32 p.m. EST December 5, 2005

Johnstown -- These 11 illegal immigrants from Mexico work for a construction company from Oklahoma. The company is sub-contracted to work on the plant's roof.

One construction manager would not go on camera today but told Channel 6 News by phone they were not aware of the worker's status before this incident, but they know now. They've talked with the groups employer who reassures them the rest of their workers have green cards. The contractors are not looking any further into it. Cambria County officials are not happy about this and do not condone it. Area union groups Channel 6 News talked with say the same, there is no reason contractors working on the plant can't be hired locally, especially with our unemployment rate.

Those illegal immigrants are now in the custody of immigration officials.

In the meantime, construction on the Gamesa site is back on schedule after a fire inside the roof on Halloween set the project back a couple of weeks. More crews were brought in to work. That brought the project up to speed. The building will be closed up this week and the heating added. The roof is also being finished.
