McCain clinches GOP nomination, CNN projects

McCain clinches GOP nomination, CNN projects

    March 4, 2008
(CNN) -- Sen. John McCain will win Texas and become the Republican presidential nominee, CNN projects.

Sen. John McCain clinched the GOP presidential nomination Tuesday, according to CNN projections.

McCain swept all four contests in Texas, Ohio, Vermont and Rhode Island, giving him the 1,191 delegates needed to clinch the GOP nomination.

McCain will travel to the White House to be endorsed by President Bush as early as Wednesday, sources tell CNN.

The Arizona senator overwhelmingly won moderates and conservatives in Ohio, but he lost the evangelical vote to Mike Huckabee, according to exit polls.

On the Democratic side, Barack Obama was projected to take Vermont, but the contests in Ohio, Texas and Rhode Island were too close to call.

    The Campaign Spot

It's Official: Congrats to McCain: Vaya Con Dios, Mike Huckabee

This result has been clear for a while, but tonight it is official...

Congratulations to John McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential nominee.

It is an improbable and hard-fought victory, worth savoring by him and his staff this evening.

UPDATE: Word from Team Huckabee is that they have no plans to depart the race tomorrow. Of course, it's just a matter of time.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Ah-ha. The reason no announcement tomorrow is because he's departing the race tonight. Vaya con Dios, Mike Huckabee.

Huckabee Drops Out Of GOP Race
Following Losses, Former Arkansas Governor Leaves Race; Bush To Endorse McCain

(CBS) Mike Huckabee dropped out of the race for the GOP presidential nomination tonight.

CBS News confirms that President George W. Bush will endorse presumptive GOP nominee John McCain tomorrow. McCain will travel to the White House to receive the endorsement.

McCain has been projected by CBS News to win today's contests in Texas, Ohio, Vermont and Rhode Island. McCain entered the day with just under 1,000 delegates, and today's wins could give him the 1,191 delegates he needs to clinch the nomination.

Huckabee, who won the GOP's first contest in Iowa, has continued to campaign despite McCain emerging after Super Tuesday as the presumptive Republican nominee. He has come under increasing pressure from Republican leaders to drop out of the race so that McCain could shift his focus to the general election.

"We stayed in until the race was over," Huckabee told supporters tonight.

"This clears the path for McCain to begin his general election process in earnest," said CBSNews.com Senior Political Editor Vaughn Ververs. "With a possible protracted battle on the Democratic side that could continue for weeks, it's a luxury Republicans need as they enter into a difficult road towards November."

At least today he’s saying my friends. Give it time it will be my amigos.
Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote!
