Illegally armed migrant sentenced to 21 months

A man who prosecutors say admitted to robbing illegal immigrants along the U.S.-Mexico border was sentenced to 21 months in prison Tuesday by a federal judge in Tucson.
Jose Domingo Valdez-Alvarez, 42, of Sinaloa, Son., pleaded guilty June 20 to the charge of illegal alien in possession of a firearm, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
In the course of his guilty plea, Valdez-Alvarez admitted that in March he possessed a Smith & Wesson .38 Special revolver loaded with six rounds of ammunition, and that he positioned himself near a border road, prosecutors said.
He said he wore dark clothing and a mask over his face and intended to rob illegal immigrants as they crossed the border. He said the money Border Patrol agents found on him was taken from other illegal immigrants.
