    Local border arrests are up; other areas see drop


    Intensified efforts could explain rise

    SAN DIEGO – While illegal border-crossing arrests have dipped in most areas this year, the San Diego area is the only stretch of the U.S.-Mexico border where the apprehension rate is still up.
    Compared with the same period a year ago, the Border Patrol has seen a 21 percent drop in apprehensions along the southern border between Oct. 1, 2006 – the start of the 2007 federal fiscal year – and July 31. Most Border Patrol sectors have reported declines in border-crossing arrests, ranging from 3 percent in the busy Tucson sector to a dramatic 68 percent drop in Yuma.

    The San Diego sector, however, saw border-crossing arrests pick up, from 121,790 at this time a year ago to 127,742.

    While this represents an uptick of just 5 percent, the higher arrest rate stands out in comparison with the decreases along the rest of the border.

    The agency said the increase could have more to do with San Diego agents making additional arrests than with more smuggling traffic. In February, the San Diego sector launched a stepped-up enforcement effort, coordinated with other agencies, that aimed to decrease smuggling along a busy stretch of the border between Otay Mesa and Tecate.

    You might as well try to hold back the ocean w/a bedsheet. The sad part is the 127,000 people they stopped will be back next week to try again.
