Joe Amerling, an investigator with the Gainesville-Hall County Gang Task Force, gave a presentation at the meeting addressing North Georgia gang crime. Amerling said illegal immigration was a topic several different agencies wanted to discuss.

"We talked a lot about immigration and education and the firm prosecution of (gang) crimes," said Amerling, the vice president of the Georgia Gang Investigators Association.

The meeting, arranged by David Nahmias, U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, is the first of its kind since Nahmias took over the position last December, Amerling said.

"(Nahmias) sees this as a nationwide problem, not just here locally," Amerling said of the new U.S. attorney. "He's a squared-away guy, and gangs are a focus of his. He recognizes that gangs are on the rise nationally and that we can no longer turn a blind eye to them."

On Wednesday, officials from agencies including metro Atlanta and Cherokee and Habersham counties worked to come up with strategies to defend gang violence in their respective areas.

Amerling said many agencies eventually might follow Hall County's lead by creating a gang task force unit.

"We're fortunate enough to have one of the only proactive gang task forces in the state," said Amerling, a member of the Gainesville-Hall Gang Task Force since its inception in 1998. "We identified the problem in 1997. I'd hate to see where we'd be if we hadn't."

With an international airport and some of the larger cities in the state, Amerling said gangs in metro Atlanta and other cities in North Georgia are on the rise. There's also a steady increase in gang activity in Hall County because of the growing community and illegal immigrants, he said.

Nearly 90 percent of gangs in Hall have a membership that is mostly Latino, according to the Hall County Sheriff's Office.

When the Gainesville-Hall Gang Task Force was created in 1998 there were 24 identifiable gangs with nearly 1,000 members. Though there has been a decline in the numbers since then (recent figures indicate there are five prominent gangs with around 250 members), Amerling says those numbers can be misleading.

Including those five prominent gangs, there are 21 documented gangs in the area, he said.

Clayton County in south metro Atlanta may have one of the worst documented gang problems in the state, according to Amerling. Black gangs, mainly the Crips and the Bloods, litter the area and a large number of Latino gangs also have infiltrated the city's suburbs, Amerling added.

According to the Hall County Sheriff's Office the five main gangs in Hall are SUR 13, centered around Rabbittown and New Holland; BOE, south of Gainesville; PLC 21, a gang that covers the largest area near Oakwood and Candler and up Atlanta Highway into Habersham County; MVS, south of Gainesville near Gillsville Highway; and the gang known as Southside, south of Gainesville on Atlanta Highway.

May I ask, why did you ever turn a blind eye to them? What is wrong with you people?

Hmmmm....90% is "mostly Latino". I'd say that's mostly most of 'em, eh? Are they members of LULAC or National Council of La Raza? I wonder if they were at the convention in Arkansas (LULAC) or Philly (La Raza) or were too busy and just sent "delegates"?

You know....this is just a subtle little thing that annoys me but note the language of this sentence, "Black gangs...."LITTER THE AREA".....Latino gangs also have infiltrated the city's suburbs."

Does anyone see the problem with this language?

Why didn't the writer say...Black and Latino gangs litter the area...or Black and Latino gangs have infiltrated the city's suburbs. Why is one referred to as Litter and the other one "infiltrators"??

Oh well....here is the situation with the gangs. Until America gets jobs that suit our young American Citizens, gangs are going to expand. They don't see jobs, opportunities, futures....gangs rule because society has failed them. It starts young too....in our schools. When we can't put an end to the Bloods and the Crips because we can't keep the drugs from coming across our borders because we aren't securing our borders, then gangs will rule. When as a society we can't show our young Black Americans adequate employment, adequate earnings, adequate opportunity....gangs will rule. When our young Black Americans are still referred to with derogatory phrases as "litter" in the area....gangs will rule, because society has failed these young people.

I mean....they can't get a job because grown ups from Mexico are stealing all their opportunities....and NOW, they can't even have a gang without the Latino's infiltrating their "turf". Society has failed our young Black Americans through illegal immigration and favoritism to illegal "latino" aliens over Black American Citizens. It is repugnant and it needs to end now.

Wake Up America--get these illegal aliens out of our country so we can get our American Citizens back to work and our young people back on track.
