The illegals mess: Capitulation ...
Tuesday, June 20, 2006
Indiana Rep. Mike Pence asks us to don a new contraption of blinders and rose-colored glasses to accept a "rational middle ground" on immigration.
Having strong conservative credentials, Mr. Pence, a Republican, is supposed to give amnesty a patina of credibility and a misleading name while selling out American workers and national sovereignty.
His plan calls for a "guest-worker" program providing cover for illegal worker and illegal employer alike.
Illegals would have to return to Mexico for a week, jump through procedural hoops, then return to their jobs in the United States. "Guest-worker" eligibility lasts six years. Workers will then have to decide then if they want to become citizens or go home.
Private employment agencies will match workers with employers. No one will be allowed in without a job waiting that no citizen would take. Each illegal will carry a high-tech, "guest-worker" card.
We must take it on faith the new law will be well-enforced, unlike the current regime, which has allowed illegals to hit perhaps 12 million. But the underlying premise will not change: cheap, foreign labor easy to manage.
Most despicably, the law -- the law, mind you -- would certify that a true path to citizenship begins with an illegal act.
There is only one way to get this under control: Secure the southern border with 2,000 miles of fence and enforce the law against illegals and employers alike.
Anything else is a sellout.
