Immigrant, U.S. Born Latino Youth Have Highest Salaries
LOS ANGELES -- Foreign-born Latino teens are the highest paid group in the teen labor market, earning twice as much as African Americans and Anglo Americans in their same age group, according to a new report. Extraordinary work opportunities are available to these youth, the majority of which have to work, according to the latest findings of the Pew Hispanic Center's (PHC) study co-authored by center researchers Richard Fry B. and Lindsay Lowell. This advantage, however, is temporary, as young Latino immigrants have an easier time finding employment than other groups of youth, but are also the first to lose their jobs. And as they move into older age groups, their wages do not follow them. Overall the study reports good news for Latinos. As the second generation establishes itself in the labor market, the economic status of Latinos will improve. This movement, however, will not bring complete parity between second generation Latinos and whites.
