700 Miles Of Fence Then What?

    Ken Hughes
    October 1, 2006

Then what happens along the remaining nearly 1000 miles of unfenced boarder between Mexico and the US. Does Congress believe the illegals will be to dumb too find the holes in the fence? A 700 hundred mile fence is a very short term solution to a very long term problem. Unless and until Congress is willing to enact and enforce laws against what attracts the illegals to America boarder security is a losing battle. The wall does nothing to eliminate the opportunities illegals seek when they come to Amreica.
I have no idea why they chose the locations for the fences they did, from what I saw they’re in short sprits all near populated areas leaving miles between open and unfenced. I’m sure whoever planned the fence felt those unfenced areas in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas were too desolate an environment that they wouldn’t need fencing, when you’re one of the Hispanic poor and opportunity bids you welcome no environment is too harsh, no risk is too great not to take the chance.
Illegal immigrants aren’t limited to Hispanics from Latin America they come from all corners of the world. The only reason it isn’t known is because there’s no Media focus on those from the Balkans, Eastern Europe, Middle East and China. They come through Canada because Canada has fewer laws governing immigration and the Canadians know and in many cases facilitate illegal immigration into the US across their border. It’s easier for an Arab terrorist to enter Canada than for an American who lives just across the border to enter Canada.
They come more for the enticements of work and an opportunity that enables them to support large families at home that’s what creates the desire for illegals to come to America. They don’t come with the intentions of staying, American citizenship isn’t on their minds, once they're here they get hooked on America only then do they begin to understand the difference between here and home and make the decision to stay.
I recall the time when there were Anglo recruiters working the streets of Mexico’s interior Villages offering work in America and paying the Coyote fees to get them over the border. The illegal immigrant doesn’t understand the politics of the situation, they understand when they get to America they’ll be assured employment. Whatever menial wage they earn in America surpasses what they can earn at home.
Today’s illegal immigration is reminiscent of the Spanish American War. The Hurst Newspapers whipped up American emotions to a point the Administration of William McKinley had little choice but to go to war with Spain. This isn’t much different than that war. There’s been some talk by extremists of a war with Mexico over illegal immigration. The media in both cases has taken a problem and totally distorted it for the sake of circulation and politics. I agree there is a problem but no fences will resolve it.
The only way to successfully halt illegal immigration is to eliminate the enticements. Make it so expensive for those who hire illegal workers it’s no longer profitable. Hold the government accountable for their share of the blame, any state or federal agency that accommodates illegals with benefits with draw it’s funding. Require proof of citizenship for employment, all employment. Require proof of citizenship from anyone requesting benefits, licenses etc. Anything that’s to be paid by any government agency should only be to citizens or legal residents.
A few weeks ago an advertisement appeared on our Cable Channel. It was paid for by the state of Michigan, it was promoting the use of food stamps, it told of all the things you could have and not give up to collect food stamps. It also said you didn’t need proof of citizenship.
The state of Michigan isn’t alone in its advertising geared to illegal immigrants, several banks and other lending institutions advertise to attract illegal immigrants. I personally know of several illegal immigrants who’ve leased vehicles from dealers who don’t require citizenship, who purchase insurance without proof of citizenship.
As long as illegal immigrants are accorded the same privileges as citizens they will take the risk and cross through a pond of hungry alligators for the privilege of sharing in the American dream. Illegal immigration isn’t a new phenomenon it’s been around for some 200 years. It’s just that each generation has a different view how to approach the subject.
What do you want to bet the Contractor who builds the fence will hire illegal Mexicans to do the hard backbreaking labor? When Israelis built their wall some of the concrete came from Egypt and some from Palestinian businesses in Gaza, most of the labor was Palestinian. Illegal immigration, Congress get real or forget it.

There will never be a fence, of any length. It's just a tactic to placate and calm the waters until after the election.
Calderon was absolutely right when he said...."Where there is a Mexican, there is Mexico".

Let's us assume, for a minute, the fence is built. IMHO, the fence would be a very helpful tool. The fenced sectors would funnel the illegals into the areas where there are no fences. It stands to reason that less boots on the ground will be required to patrol along the fences. Those boots that the fences free up can then be stationed along the non-fenced sectors, the funnel areas if you will. This isn't brain science - a fence can only help - not hurt the situation. Anyone that says different is either a pro-illegal advocate, illegal immigrant, or open borders advocate (most are probably all three).

    Americangirl,
I agree with you. I'll believe it when I see it. And, it's a legitamate question: What then?

Without interior enforcement of our laws and deportation of illegals, the fence is of little use.

You're exactly right, MW, and for that reason it will never be built.
It's like hell vomited and the Bush administration appeared.
