Arpaio says he's bringing crime sweep to Mesa

The Arizona Republic
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's next illegal immigration enforcement effort will be in Mesa.
"As our deputies fight crime in the cities, towns and desert areas within the County, we are hitting the illegal immigration problem from every angle," Arpaio said in a press release Wednesday afternoon. "Next, I will direct our operations to Mesa."
MCSO Capt. Paul Chagolla would not provide details on when and where the enforcement would occur, but said the agency will give two days' notice to the Mesa Police Department as requested by Chief George Gascón in a letter last week.
Gascón said Wednesday that he has not been notified and would not comment further.
Gascón wrote to Arpaio after eight state legislators invited Arpaio to conduct immigration sweeps in the East Valley. Gascón also requested liaisons between the two law enforcement agencies. Chagolla said Arpaio is still considering the request.
Arpaio brought his deputies to Mesa twice in November, arresting several undocumented immigrants.
Amid growing concerns over possible violence, Gascón told his staff last week that the department is developing a plan to handle potential civil unrest or demonstrations tied to MCSO sweeps.
The memo came after a Thursday morning demonstration by 15 pro-Arpaio demonstrators in a heavily immigrant part of Mesa.
