FAIRFIELD — Across the street from the Koch Foods facility in Fairfield where Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested at least 160 people Tuesday, local human rights advocates and family members of the detained workers gathered in the C and T Design parking lot.

Sister Alice Gerdemann from the Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center said her organization was there to ensure the ICE respected the rights of both detainees and their families.

"We have particular interest that children of the people taken in the sweep are not frightened, and their rights are respected," she said. "We're sincerely trusting and hoping that will be taken into consideration."

Brian Moskowitz, the ICE special agent in charge of the raid, said officials would be sensitive to that need.

"The people who do not have extenuating circumstances," he said, "will be processed and released with a court date."

As of 3:30 p.m., he said no stranded children had been identified, but he expected that to change.

"There's going to be people with families," he said.

Sylbia Castellanos, an organizer with the Coalition for the Dignity and Rights of Immigrants — CODETI — expressed greater concern about the raid and its impact.

"This is very upsetting," she said.

Castellano said the organization also hoped to sponsor or otherwise help the children whose parents were detained in the action.

"Now, everyone's going to be scared. People will be afraid to take their kids to school, to go to work, to go shopping; they're terrorizing our community. We are here to see, to protest and to see what we can do."

At the news conference, Castellanos and a small group of CODETI supporters protested outside the Hilton Netherlands Cincinnati hotel where the conference was held.

"What is happening today is happening all over the country," she said. "ICE is breaking up families."

Yep, they DO need to get off the 'breaking up families' crap. The family can leave this country with the deported individuals. I'm sick of hearing of their 'family values' when it's they who break the law and put themselves and their families in this situation. Of course, they accept NO responsibility, conveniently placing 100% of the blame on America's shoulders.
And while they're at it- cut out the 'Americans are racist' bull, too. They understand PERFECTLY this isn't about 'race' - It's about Breaking The Law - and AMERICANS with a belly full of their drunk driving, tax-evading, identity stealing, job taking, robbing, raping, molesting, & murdering when they have NO RIGHT to be here in the first place committing these acts of violence against us.

SHUT UP AND PACK YOUR STUFF! Pack your kids', wives, husbands, uncles, aunts, grandparents, and 42 cousins suitcases, too. ADIOS!

I am really soooh sorry but just pack up and go now. After all, there are a lot of unhappy frightened American families who are also having problems.

If it's fear of deportation that's getting their attention, that means it's working!

    The comment I left on the article;

What about the 28,000 (estimates go a high as 48,000) American citizens that have been slaughtered by illegal immigrants since 911? Where is the cries of compassion for the mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters who will NEVER be re-united with their families because they're dead!?

It took immigrants over 200 years to build this country, illegal aliens are destroying it overnight.

"The people who do not have extenuating circumstances," he said, "will be processed and released with a court date."
We call that "catch & release." You know, the procedure that Bush and Chertoff said had ended.

Most of those folks released will never show up for their court date. They'll just move to another area of the country and start all over.
