On Immigration, American Workers Are Being Asked to Fund Our Own Demise | Opinion

It's hard to imagine that the crisis at our southern border could get any worse, but it's about to. In less than a week, a Trump-era border control policy known as Title 42 is set to end. Title 42 allowed border patrol agents to rapidly expel migrants and asylum seekers at the border. With 9,000 people illegally crossing the border daily with Title 42 in place, it's about to reach a whole new level of crisis.

Progressives deny that they support open borders, but what else can you call this? Every measure that former President Trump put in place to protect us from millions of people charging our borders has been retracted by the Biden administration, ensuring that the record levels we've seen will only increase.

What else can you call 2 million illegal border crossings but open borders?

The Biden administration likes to tell us that we should have compassion for these people. I certainly do.

Legitimate asylum seekers in my opinion should be allowed to follow the process for asylum. But asylum is supposed to be for people fleeing a country, not skipping through multiple ones until you arrive at the one you want.

That's what another Trump-era immigration policy said. Remain in Mexico told asylum seekers they had to first apply in Mexico if they were coming here through our southern border. Of course, Biden scrapped that, too.

The truth is a lot of the migrants coming today will not qualify for asylum.

They are economic migrants. And here's the thing about economic migrants: There may be an arguable case for bringing in workers for jobs Americans don't want. But when it comes to jobs Americans do want, illegal economic migrants bring down wages. That's just simple supply and demand.

It's not just about wages, though. Progressives constantly talk about public welfare programs like Medicare for All. But then they turn around and support effectively having no borders. How is that supposed to work? You have 15 million people in this country who aren't here legally, who will at some point need medical care. How is it fair to ask American taxpayers to pay for that, especially when you're guaranteeing that the number will only grow?

We constantly hear about teacher shortages and classrooms being over-crowded. Many of these teachers are overworked and underpaid. American children at the bottom end of the economic spectrum are not getting a fair shot at the American Dream due to our failing public schools.

Yet the Biden administration wants us to allow millions more illegal immigrants and their children to flood our schools.

How is that fair to our own kids?

Most people I talk to from day to day have no issue helping their fellow Americans if they need it. Like me, they believe that if folks need a hand, let's help out.

But that's not what I hear from the Left. Instead, it seems like they are only too eager to help people from other countries—in other countries—but if you suggest focusing on Americans first, they consider that bigoted.

    Why?

Helping people from other countries while your own people suffer is wrong—especially when it's the tax dollars of the people that are suffering funding it.

We're being asked to fund policies that encourage more and more people to use the resources that our children need and so often don't get. We're being asked to support policies that import laborers who want our jobs, or whose presence lowers our wages. We're being asked fund military operations that increase the cost of gas.

Why is there always so much compassion for everyone else?

El Paso, Texas just announced a state of emergency over the end of Title 42. Mayor Oscar Leeser said it was the sight of people on downtown streets with temperatures dipping below freezing that made him act. Yet we have elderly people and American veterans sleeping on the street and no state of emergency has been declared.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams was even more clear: "Our shelter system is full, and we are nearly out of money, staff, and space," he said. "Truth be told, if corrective measures are not taken soon, we may very well be forced to cut or curtail programs New Yorkers rely on."

In the choice between American citizens and illegal immigrants, it's clear who has been chosen.

The bottom line is this: Under the current administration, the American worker is being asked to fund his or her own demise.
