Anti-Illegal Immigration Group To Make Greensboro Stop

    POSTED: 2:59 pm EDT May 10, 2006

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A group which organizes armed citizen patrols at the U.S.-Mexican border will present its side of the immigration issue in Greensboro on Wednesday.

The Minuteman Project is planning a rally at 7 p.m., although the location hasn't been set. Minuteman co-founder Jim Gilchrist will be on hand to speak and meet with supporters.

The appearance is part of a U.S. tour scheduled to end in Washington DC on Friday. The group clashed with counter-protesters at Tuesday night's rally in Atlanta, and with groups in other cities during the tour.

A local chapter of the International Socialist Organization said it plans to stage a protest at around the same time to show the Minuteman group it's not wanted in town.

Minutemen have called for tougher immigrant laws and organizing citizen border patrols at the U.S./Mexico border.

Group that patrols U.S.-Mexican border to rally in Greensboro

    Associated Press

GREENSBORO, N.C. - A group which organizes armed citizen patrols at the U.S.-Mexican border will present its side of the immigration issue in Greensboro tonight.

The Minuteman Project is planning a rally at 7 p.m., although the location hasn't been set. Minuteman co-founder Jim Gilchrist will be on hand to speak and meet with supporters.

A local chapter of the International Socialist Organization says it plans to stage a protest at around the same time to show the Minuteman group it's not wanted in town.

Large protests have accompanied a number of the Minuteman rallies. At a rally in Albuquerque, New Mexico, violence erupted between Minuteman members and what an event coordinator says was "Mexican gangs." In other locations, the Minuteman group has drawn protesters.

    Minuteman rally canceled

    By Joe Killian
    Staff Writer
GREENSBORO -- The Minuteman Project rally scheduled for tonight was abruptly canceled today. The group, which organizes armed patrols of the US-Mexico border, said the event would not be rescheduled.

Rick Rose, owner of American Furniture Warehouse on High Point Road, where the group was set to rally, said he had been misinformed about what type of group the Minuteman Project was.

"We were told that they were some sort of church group on a mission, and we agreed to let them stop here," Rose said.

Rose learned from a story in the News & Record who the Minuteman project actually were, he said.

"I have nothing against immigrants, I do a lot of trade with Mexico and I don't want anything to do with that type of group," Rose said. "If they show up here I'll have them escorted off the property."

A Minuteman representative who asked not to be named said the group will move on to Washington D.C. - the next stop on their 13-city caravan tour.

Calls to the International Socialist Organization, which was staging a protest against the group downtown, were not immediately returned Wednesday afternoon. There is no word on whether that protest will go on.

    Minuteman Project Cancels Greensboro Rally

    POSTED: 8:04 am EDT May 10, 2006
    UPDATED: 4:33 pm EDT May 10, 2006

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A group which organizes armed citizen patrols at the U.S.-Mexican border canceled a planned rally in the Triad.

The Minuteman Project had planned to present its side of the immigration issue in Greensboro.

Officials with the group said they couldn't find a place to hold the rally. Organizers wanted to have the event at American Furniture Warehouse on High Point Road, but WXII 12 News learned that the owner wouldn't allow the group to use his property.

Large protests have accompanied a number of the Minuteman rallies. At a rally in Albuquerque, N.M., violence erupted between Minuteman members and what an event coordinator said was "Mexican gangs." In other locations, the Minuteman group has drawn protesters.

I find that VERY hard to believe -- what part of "Minuteman" sounds like a church group? but by all means, let the socialist have their protests

the Minutemen don't have a problem with immigrants either -- this man apparently has a problem processing information

This is about more than a neighborhood furniture store.

    http://www.ihfc.com/

People, products, promotions: from the beginning the High Point Market has connected all aspects of the home furnishings industry. Buyers and sellers come together from all 50 states and 110 countries around the world. They come to purchase home furnishings at the one market where manufacturers choose to introduce their new products, new styles, new finishes and new concepts. High Point is the market where buyers come to see it first, buy it first, and sell it first.

Each April and October, High Point earns the right to be called #1 in the industry. The sheer size and scope of the High Point Market easily surpass any other home furnishings event held anywhere in the world.
