    Immigration enforcement costs local government

    While local police departments are contending with tightening budgets, they are also picking up costs created by shortcomings in federal immigration policy and enforcement, according to a new report by the American Civil Liberties Union.

    One example cited are people who are stopped for driving without a license, an offense that can result in arrest and subsequent reporting to the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. Ninety percent of California’s counties have partnerships with ICE to check inmates for residency status.

    In Sacramento County, it costs $15.86 to cite and release someone caught driving without a license, while it costs $528.32 to stop and arrest that person.

    The feds do not cover the all costs associated with holding those who become immigration detainees, according to the report.

    “ICE provides limited reimbursement only for immigrant detainees who have been convicted of one felony or two misdemeanor offenses and who are held for at least 4 consecutive days,â€
