    T
wo Britons were ordered to leave France on Wednesday as they posed a "threat to public order" after police accused them of orchestrating violent clashes between hundreds of UK-bound migrants and police in Calais.

Steven Martin, a 31-year-old Cambridge academic, and Richard Jones, a 19-year-old from Denbigh in North Wales stood "immediate trial" at a nearby court in the town of Boulogne.

Police accused them of being activists with the No Borders group and fomenting the violent standoff on Monday that saw migrants hurl stones, traffic cones and even tree trunks onto a motorway leading to Calais port so they could board UK-bound lorries.

Police used teargas and even water canon to disperse them.

Officers even accused Mr Martin, who has published government reports on public health, of using his scientific background to try and "brew’"tear gas in a makeshift laboratory in the "jungle" camp that houses up to 6,000 migrants.

Both vehemently denied belonging to the group and said they abhorred violence. They confirmed that balaclava-clad No Borders militants were trying to convince migrants to resort to attacking police.

Mr Martin, a long-time volunteer in Calais' "jungle", had been accused by police of "orchestrating" the entire riot, and looking for police "weak spots"in order to send migrants to such areas

But Mr Martin, who faced charges of throwing projectiles and smashing the back window of a police van, was cleared on both counts by magistrates despite the testimony of four police officers and their chief.

Mr Jones had also been accused of playing a key part in Monday's shocking clashes but insisted he was merely trying to defuse a tense situation.

He pleaded guilty to swearing at a police officer, likening them to "Nazis" and "fascists" on a par with collaborationist French police in the Second World War. He was handed a two-month suspended sentence.

After the hearing, both were handed notices from the local prefecture ordering them to leave France without delay due to ‘their behaviour and attitude towards the police" and the fact that they posed a "threat to public order’.

Police on Monday accused representatives of No Borders, an organisation that seeks the end of border controls, of helping to organise the intrusion on the ring road.

Mr Martin said he was against No Borders' argument that "rock throwing is a legitimate means of defence".

Outside court, Mr Jones warned that if Britain voted to leave Europe on today's (Thursday) referendum "will make the situation ten times worse" in Calais among migrants. "If they suddenly sense that their rights of abode in the UK are affected by this, then the position of desperation that they are in will only be exacerbated."
