MONTGOMERY -- A Decatur senator wants to make it against the law to knowingly transport an illegal immigrant in Alabama.

Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur, said if his substitute Senate bill 225 passes, it will be illegal to knowingly transport an illegal immigrant in this state for commercial reasons or private financial gain.

Examples of situations the bill covers include employers providing illegal immigrant employees transportation to and from work. The bill also covers people paid to transport immigrants through the state, Orr said. The bill would not penalize people who provide a ride if they do not know the person is here illegally, he said.

Under the bill, people found guilty of the violation commit a Class C felony and face a fine of $1,000 for each offense.

The bill awaits final passage in the Senate. It must also pass the House and receive the governor's signature to become law.
